What Scares Me: Diabetes

I wish I could be fearless. It would be great to go through life with no fears. However, like most people, I, too, have things that scare me, such as diabetes.

I know that diabetes affects many parts of the body, such as the eyes, legs, and feet. My eyes, legs, and feet are very important to me, as is the rest of my body. Therefore, I am trying to take care of myself so that I can avoid this disease. Hopefully, I am not too late.

One thing I am doing to take care of myself is going easy on the sweets. Like most people, I have a sweet tooth. I like sweet foods such as candy, cookies, and donuts, and I do eat these foods occasionally. I do not make it a habit, however. Restricting sweets the way I do helps me to watch my weight, makes sweets a treat when I do eat them, and is helping me to protect my health. Watching what I eat is not all that I am doing in an effort to avoid diabetes, however.

Another thing that I am doing is exercising. I have a pilates set that I use frequently, and I run every day. I have a variety of CDs to choose from when I work out, such as "Bananarama: Venus and Other Hits" and "Billy Joel Greatest Hits Volume III". Having different music to work out to keeps me from getting bored with my workouts. I want to take care of myself, because I have big plans.

One thing that I hope to do is run in a marathon. I want to feel the excitement of competing against others in an event. I also want to compete against myself as I run in other marathons and work to beat my time. Running in a marathon would be impossible if I lost my legs and feet from diabetes, so I definitely want to keep them. Competing in a marathon is not all that I want to do, however.

I also want to continue my online publishing. It would be very difficult, if not impossible, to do this if I could not see. I want to continue to feel the excitement of increasing my earnings and rank, and I want to get more followers. For this to happen, I have to be able to see. If I can see, I can continue my work. I can also see the beautiful world around me.

My grandfather is a diabetic. My husband and several members of his family also have the disease. I hope to avoid it, however. I can then live the life that I want to live.
