A Restless Legs Night

Have you ever laid in bed at night ready for a good nights sleep only to have the uncontrollable urge to move ? You stretch , bend , twist your legs only to get no relief . You finally have to get out of bed because you just cant take this feeling anymore . I am now 48 years old but at the age of 7 I had my first bout with a restless legs night . First of all I had no idea what was going on , I just knew I wanted these urges to stop . I heard the excuse , its just growing pains , it will go away . It seemed like no one really understood including my Doctor . All I could do is try to deal with it .

Restless Leg Syndrome Symptoms

Most people describe this problem as an uncomfortable feeling from the knee down to their feet . It ranges from a tickly , tingling , crawling , or even a burning feeling . From my personal point of view its just a plain indescribable feeling . If you have RLS you will know it . The only relief from it is movement of the legs .

Restless Leg Syndrome Causes

There are many theories of how people end up with this from inheriting it , hormonal changes , nerve damage , iron deficiency , to an imbalance of dopamine in the brain . Dopamine helps to control muscle movement in your body as well as many other things .

Risk Factors

One main complaint is having trouble going to sleep , staying asleep and daytime drowsiness . There are no known risk factors to having RLS .

Diagnosing Restless Leg Syndrome

When you go to a Doctor he will more than likely listen to the description of your symptoms and have you give him your medical history . To be diagnosed with RLS you must have the following , an irresistible urge to move your legs while in a still position , only activity will help the urges and symptoms are worse at night .

Restless Leg Treatment

If it is found that you have an iron deficiency your Doctor will give you a supplement and monitor it through blood work . Sometimes it can boil down to a few simple lifestyle changes which can vary from person to person . There are medications that are available but I would only recommend this after a long discussion with my Doctor .

My Conclusion To You

Share how you are feeling with your family and friends as this will make you feel more comfortable when you are around them . The reason I recommend this to you is that if you feel the need for movement don't resist for this will only make your symptoms worse . Keep track of what works best for you . Exercise everyday , do stretching exercises and don't be afraid to lean on your loved ones for emotional support . I hope things get better for you soon , as I know how you feel .
