Do you have some sort of silly lump on the side of your neck? If you do, you probably would think that it’s just a swollen gland. These are typically harmless and nothing to worry about. But what if it’s a bigger problem?
Sometimes this symptom can be from a progressed stage of tonsil cancer.
What’s even more shocking and disturbing is that HPV, which is usually associated with sexually transmitted diseases, could cause this sort of problem. Even if you first came across it 10 years ago or more!
HPV has recently been more reported as the culprit behind cancers of the throat and mouth. And now tonsil cancer is show to be a something that can be added to the list.
There are over 34 thousand people who will get some form of oral cancer. If you’re a man reading this, your risk has just gone up since it’s usually found in men more often then women.
This sort of thing is usually brought on by smoking, right? While this is still true, statistically, this is shown to be an older way of thinking. What I mean is, statistically, the rates of oral cancers from nicotine have declined in recent decades while oral cancers connected to HPV have increased well over 200% from the late eighties to today. This is found in the Journal of Clinical Oncology.
So what else should you know? Well, another disturbing truth is that the rate of these oral forms of cancers has far exceeded cervical cancer. This is the form of cancer that is most talked about from the HPV vaccine that was mandated to young schoolgirls started by Rick Perry of Texas while he was governor.
So let’s review what’s going on with this new information. HPV is most commonly known to cause genital warts and the cervical cancers risks in women. But the new statistics prove that the odds of a man getting an oral form of cancer from HPV is far greater then the cervical cancer risk that has been so publicized and talked about over the last few years.
With all of this new data, we should all shift out expectations on what the real risks of HPV can present us. Here’s the good news. Cancers of the mouth or throat have a higher chance of cure. Sometimes up to 80% better chance.
Let’s review what has not changed. More then 80% of you who probably came across HPV in your life and cleared yourself from it just by the nature of your body’s natural immune system. But for some of us, we get a ‘chronic viral presence’ of HPV that may eventually gain enough strength to cause tumors.
So how do you prevent this problem for yourself and your children? Education and vaccination are the best answers to help drastically reduce your risk and your children.
We hope that this has helped you understand HPV. Please leave a comment if you have any questions or have any similar subject interest.
thank you very much guys. Hope that this helps keep everyone be informed on how to be a little bit healthier. We are learning more and more about the risks of HPV. Everyone should be aware since almost everyone has come in contact with this virus whether they realize it or not!
This really helped in understanding HPV. I can now consciously look out. Good info Laura.
thanks Roger. It's amazing what risks are real versus what risks are the most talked about on the news. it's not always the same list of things to be worried about!
Good article and hopefully a wake up call for some people. Oral cancer is almost unknown amongst non smokers (heavy spirit drinkers are a bigger risk again) but HPV is a new risk. My day job in Dentistry makes me always on the look out for these serious health risks.
