A Report From The Nation Of Change – Syngenta to Face Criminal Charges

I have just receive notification that Syngenta is to face criminal charges for covering up data that proves their genetically modified corn Bt 176 is directly responsible for killing live stock. Dr Eva Sirinathsinghji who writes for a magazine has imparted the news that Syngenta now face these criminal charges.

The company allegedly ran their own studies on Bt 176 corn in 1996 and summarily ceased the tests when four cows died after just two days of consuming the product called “Frankencorn”. These results buried and never revealed. A German farmer, Gottfried Gloeckner, filed suit against the company after loosing dozens of his dairy cows that had died from consuming Bt 176 corn. He started partially feeding his dairy herd the corn in 1997 after the company Syngenta got approval to run tests on his property. By 2000 it was the only feed the German was feeding his cows.

He noticed his cows were beginning to suffer from serious illnesses, which, in numerous cases resulted in the cows demise. Five died in 2001 and seven in 2002 which encouraged him to remove all G.M.O. feed from his live stock. The rest of his herd still continued to suffer intestinal damage, milk production decreased and he ended by having to put down the rest of the herd. A civil court case brought against Syngenta in 2007, saw them lie about the dangers of Bt 176.

By this time Syngenta had paid compensation to the farmer for his loss because of their consumption of the corn, but they still would not admit that the corn was responsible for the cows demise. This seemed to have appeased the EU and the German Governments because they refused to investigate the happening. The farmer has been left to his own to attempt to right the insurmountable debt from his loss, and has had no recourse to the law courts.

But this has changed, the farmer found out about the Syngenta's 1996 case study and he started legal action against them, a German activist group, and another farmer are also now dogging the company. All are now standing against Syngenta and their case seems set in concrete. The fact that this corn is extremely toxic to cattle, now proves that Syngenta's lied about the products safety.

This company testified in 2007 in a civil case that the product Bt 176 was safe, this resulted in the case being dismissed, however the suspicions that they withheld information, has now been confirmed, and this was from their own study. It has also been discovered that they held false studies on sheep, hoping to prove the 1996 study to appear alright. A report in 2008 by GM-free Cymru, informs the study took place in Italy from 2002 to 2005 and was a poor attempt at trying to prove the Bt 176 harmless and the same as the other non GM corn. It's assumed that the results changed during the study, but the study, carried out on too small a herd and the corn used, in such low doses that it gives unrealistic results.

Now if this is not enough to prove that GM food is unsafe for human consumption, then I am at a loss about what's needed. A cow has four stomachs and is a ruminant, the first stomach is basically a storage chamber where the food's softened before being regurgitated and chewed again before being passed to the other three stomachs. If these GM products can kill a cow what chance have we, with only one.

Genetically modified foods need avoiding, or the products need a label informing the consumer that it is a GM product, this way you have the choice of feeding this rubbish to your children or not. Insufficient testing has been undertaken on these products and this case is proof of that, beware the enemy within, America, beware the enemy within.

With all the junk they put in processed foods, they still don't reveal ALL ingredients on the labels so we really don't know what they are trying to feed us. Growth hormones among them in many products. If you don't go organic, you never truly know what you're eating. This makes me furious too, Heather. Just another consumer duping. Just like mad cow disease - that wasn't from the cows, it was from what they were feeding the cows. Thanks for this very informative article, Rob.

Thanks AnnMarie, you are so right, the only thing I want is the product to say if it derives from a GMO plant, then I can refuse to buy it... those that want to take a risk carry on... my research is worrying me the amount of organic farmers now being caught out as using non organic products and loosing their organic licence... what's next...

Where are all the honest businesses? I get discouraged when I once again hear how the public is being duped for the purpose of pure greed. It's hard to trust big companies these days...what a world.

Oh the evil of greed! This stuff gets me furious! We are lucky in Australia with our labelling but nothing about labelling GM food. The reason is obvious.... even the most uneducated consumer with little thought for these things would avoid it like the plague if given the choice. Rob, once again you have stirred the pot and I'm grateful for your dedication to all things good and right. PS-ing here... and on a personal level what of the farmer who looses his precious herd?? Oh I sympathise. Every farmer I have met has the deepest respect for the animals in their care. It must be heartbreaking to know their own choices have harmed their stock and livelihood.

Terrible feeling loosing a cow let alone a whole herd... my time on the farm had me sitting all night with a sick cow as though she was my wife, for that matter Linda was right beside me through it all the way... but you do have one luck in Aussie, GM seed is banned..

As it should be but, thank you Rob, I didn't actually know that. Luckily Australia does have easier borders to protect in some ways!

Oh GMO, how we hate you. Heirloom seeds and growing your own food is the way to go. Then you know exactly what soil and fertilizers and pesticides are in your food!

That's right AJ beware though of the products you do buy, in the USA it could already be GM products...

With all this going on and governments not williing to step in a do what is right, how much of our food supply is genecticly enhanced and how can you tell if it is or not. Reminds me of ciggarettes it took years to bring to light that these things can kill you, and companys fighting the results at all costs. Even now we no for a fact that these kill people and is the main culpert of many diseases, they still sell them....asbestos is not allowed in Canada because it gives you cancer, but it is ok to sell to ohter country's.....how crazy is that....as much as I would love to see these companys chow down on some good ole Frankenburger.....will they or do they keep on pushing there drug after the fine is paid....why must so many suffer for our governments to do the right thing....are corporations just that big...a world wide snowball effect and we get rid of these companies....Im in....but do we have the time before we all perish at their hands of doom....

That's exactly it Tim the world went against the tabacco companies, in the end they won. Cigs weren't banned but the labelling came into being and the where you may smoke. It still remained a personal choice... all that's being asked of the government is that these products be marked, so that one has a choice of either you buy it or not... but big business is against that because they know their products will not sell.... so in the mean time chow down on their poisons... and kiss the world goodbye...

Yikes! Guess they'll have to be sued in Every Country though to stand a chance of stopping them. Wonder if the folks running the company sleep at night? Wow. Corn? I have not eaten corn or corn products since I was 13 other than the occasional slip-up that usually gets expelled dramatically and quickly.
