Aspirin And Cancer

Aspirin has been with us for over 100 years. It first came out in 1899 as a powder, sold by Bayer, a German firm. Since then it has been used as a remedy for aches and pains, headaches, colds, just about every ailment we have.

It’s pretty much common knowledge now that aspirin comes to our aid during a stroke or heart attack. But aspirin may be an even greater miracle that we knew.

Aspirin and Cancer

Aspirin may prevent cancer. This amazing discovery has just been released to the public. There were promising studies done that indicate not only may aspirin prevent cancer, but it might keep cancer from spreading if a person already has it.

The latest findings show that in patients who already have cancer, aspirin can cut chances it will spread by 40 to 50 percent. Taking an aspirin every day might also be very beneficial in preventing certain types of cancer, such as bowel and esophageal cancer.

Britain’s Oxford University reports that aspirin can stop the early development of some cancers that would not have any clinical signs until much later. This would be a lifesaver for people that could have cancer for a long period of time before any symptoms appeared.

The lead researcher at Oxford, Dr. Peter M. Rothwell, says that aspirin may fight cancer by inhibiting the growth of platelets. Platelets promote clotting and help cancer cells to spread. Persons that have had a stroke or heart attack are advised to take a low-dose aspirin every day. But Dr. Rothwell says the time may come when cancer prevention will be the main reason for taking aspirin.

These discoveries are so promising that experts say doctors may soon be getting guidelines on prescribing aspirins to cancer patients.

Drawbacks to Taking Aspirin

Some health experts are quick to point out that aspirin can cause abdominal bleeding. They advise everyone to check with their doctor before they start taking aspirin. In the studies done on aspirin's effect against cancer, the aspirins had to be taken every day.

A Possible Remedy for Abdominal Bleeding

There may be help on the horizon for stomach problems caused by aspirin. Research done in Germany showed that taking equal amounts of vitamin C with aspirin prevented bleeding in the stomach.

Maybe the cure for cancer is not as far off as we thought. And until then, if aspirin proves to be as promising as the results in those studies showed, a giant stop has been taken.

Street Talk

Hi Debbie. Sorry for the delay. I'm getting caught up on my messages and I've just now read your comment. This is fascinating! I wouldn't doubt that it was true. I heard a few years ago that the drug companies are no longer putting money into cures, just more expensive drugs to treat diseases. And have you ever heard anything about vitamin B17 in apricots? If my memory is correct, this vitamin was showing a lot of promise in cancer patients and the government took it off the market. They say you can't get vitamin B17 anymore! If this is true, how sad!

This would definitely break the drug companies' hearts, and bank accounts! A friend of mine said she read an article in college that said Japan had discovered a cure for cancer in the 1950s, but the big drug companies paid the people off to keep it hidden. She said the drug companies wanted to continue to produce the expensive cancer treatment drugs and make huge profits. That really wouldn't surprise me, everyone is so greedy that they would rather let people die than have a cure.

I'm one of those, too, Shawn. I learned the hard way. If there's no time to eat, gulping down a glass of milk usually works pretty good.

I have learned the hard way, (some of us have to) that you must not take it on an empty stomach. Thanks for the article.

That's right, AnnMarie, I've always heard that aspirin should be taken with food. (vitamins, too). That's interesting about the Yew tree. Concerning aspirins, I think the pharmaceutical industry might try to downplay these discoveries. They wouldn't be pleased about aspirins being so cheap. That's sad, isn't it?

And what a step it is! As far as abdominal bleeding, I believe that if you eat something before taking aspirin or drink something like milk with it, it will not tend to create this problem On an empty stomach, I can see how it could hurt it. Great article, I didn't know about these studies or findings. I have heard that the bark of the Yew tree (in South America) was promising but I think the cost was prohibitive and there just aren't enough of the trees to make it a viable resource for which to fight such a wide-spread disease.
