This is a neurological condition characterized by several problems with our attention, it is also known as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. So what makes our discussion rather interesting? Well, you might be asking yourself, from layman’s point of view, the above title could simply mean lack of attention in adults.
It is a complex and rather a chronic condition whose presence tend to vary from one person to another; although it has largely been associated to children, recent studies have indicated that even adults suffer from this condition. Now I know you will find this rather ridiculous but that’s just the way it is, why?
Causes of Attention Deficit in Adults
These problems are not caused by things like watching television, allergic reactions, playing video games or food sensitivities or lack of discipline. While the specific cause for Adult attention Deficit is unknown, a recent research done by a group of Students from Purdue University have shown that genetics and heredity plays a major role in Adult Attention Deficit.
Symptoms
Have you ever noticed a colleague in your workplace struggling to understand instructions or duties? Or a colleague easily gets distracted and having a lot of difficulties paying attention in performing tasks, more so in duties that are long and tedious? Well, research done by a group of students from Purdue University, have shown that, many people incorrectly assume that hyperactivity disorder (another name for attention deficit) is a childhood problem. But do they know that the symptoms of these chronic conditions continue into adulthood?
Now that is a good question, if during childhood, these signs are left untreated, these conditions get carried forward into adulthood and this would in turn have negative impacts on the adult’s daily activity and possible wreak havoc on the adult’s relationships and in their workplaces. Unfortunately most people tend to attribute their struggles to fast-paced world of today or stress; little do they know that these may as well be symptoms of the undiagnosed adults with these deficits.
A recent research by, Paul Ager a PhD student at Purdue University, have shown that, adults who often get distracted, always disorganized, always finding it difficult to concentrate or finding it almost impossible to concentrate during conversation, or when reading are the victims of Adult attention deficit. Although for certainty diagnosis done by trained professional, who could be able to rule out other conditions that might need treatment.
Treatments of Adult Attention Deficit
At the moment there exists no “cure” or “quick fix” for the condition rather, its treatments includes:
- Educating the affected and their family about the nature of the condition and its management
