Chronic Lyme Disease

This is a topic that I have been unfortunately close to in the past and present. Having lost one of my favorite black labs to this disease, and also having a local businessman here in my town I do business with in late stages of chronic Lyme disease, I felt it is a good time to write about what this disease is all about.

What is it?

Lyme disease is transferred by a bite from a deer tick that is carrying the bacterium Borrelia burgdorferi, and if not diagnosed properly or untreated Lyme disease can become what is called chronic, and can lead to many different problems and eventually can be fatal. It can be very frustrating as the symptoms can disappear for weeks or months then return with a vengeance.

What are the symptoms?

Lymes disease symptoms can include fever, headache, a rash and mainly fatigue. Other symptoms you may develop:

  • Arthritis, with stiffness developing in just about all of your joints.
  • Neurological Disorders, including numbness, encephalitis, memory loss and depression
  • heart problems including irregular heartbeat

How do they test for this?

the first sign of this disease is a circular bullseye rash surrounding the effected area that would show up between three and thirty days after the initial bite. lyme disease tests, performed through your doctor, will measure your antibodies in your blood. The problem with early testing is there might not be enough antibodies to tell if you are infected, making a hard disease to fight.

Treatment:

Antibiotics are the most common treatment for lymes disease, and there is a vaccination available to prevent it. Studies show that the results of the vaccination are very favorable, with 100 percent results in children. There are also some alternative treatments that have been used with favorable results. These may be found doing a search on the web.If you have any concerns at all about weather you might have this disease, I do urge you to go get tested as soon as possible. early treatment is imperative, and the longer you wait the worse it gets.

Prevention:

The best way to prevent the spread of this disease is to use caution when going places you might pick up a deer tick. There are also products that will repel the ticks you can use when in parks or wooded area for both humans and pets. When getting back indoors from areas that may pose a risk to picking up any ticks do a thorough check to make sure you or your pets have not acquired any of these little deadly pests.

I hope this article helps to explain a bit about chronic Lyme disease, and keep yourself safe from ticks when out exploring mother nature!

Timely! I did not realize there's a vaccination. Seeing doctor tomorrow... just made a note to ask about this.

Ticks suck, both literally and figuratively. As one who spends a lot of time in the woods searching for lost souls and training a dog for this task, I have plenty of opportunity for exposure. 2 embedded ticks on me, 2 on the dog. Instead of testing for Lymes the current thought is to treat profilactically. So, 10 days of antibiotics and you are good to go. DO Not use a match, DO Not use insecticide, DO NOT cover it with vasiline. The only solution is to remove it with a pair of tweezers. Clean well with antibiotic afterwards and talk to your doctor about a prescription for antibiotics. The best preventative I have found is NEEM oil. Ticks Hate the stuff, it's completely safe, can be ingested and works great for general insect control in the garden.

Good topic, Shawn--Westchester is as bad as CT (in fact, it borders south-western CT) and I have a friend who works at lawn-care and landscaping--a terrible risk for Lymes--he was taken to the hospital with heart problems, and they slipped this new thing inside in minutes and sent him home. It wasn't a pacemaker--it was meant only to regularize the existing pulse, not create one itself. Strange new medical tech for Lymes, it leaves the body after a few weeks! Never heard of it before or since...

Hi Shawn, Lyme disease is a big problem where I live in Connecticut. Whenever we garden, we wear stockings, socks, long pants, long sleeves, and cover ourselves in Skin So Soft from Avon. The ticks don't like Skin So Soft. The ticks are carried by birds too, not just deer or rodents. If you get bitten, and if you find the tick, take it to be analyzed by the Health Department. If it doesn't carry the disease, it'll give you some peace of mind, even if it did bite you.

A friend of mind picked up this disease here in the Tarn, France after being bitten by a sheep tick. Not at all pleasant for him and not the first time for him so he suspected that he was susceptible. He did recover in time BTW.

Sounds very nasty Shawn. I understand it can be carried by other animals as well as deer i.e. mice, pheasant etc., in woodland areas.

Ronnie beat me to it, we have a tick bite fever which I'm sure could almost be the same thing just known as maybe slightly different due to the difference in ticks. Suffered from tick bite fever often growing up but that was because of wanderings in the veld. Learnt after many years, that on returning from a walk in such areas, to wipe the legs with Metholated spirits, it some how gets the small ticks to drop off saving the disease...
