One of the most common causes of death these days is due to the bursting of major blood vessels damaging the vital organs such as the heart or the brain. This can occur due to a number of reasons with aneurysm being one of leading causes. Aneurysm is the bulging of the blood vessels which occurs when their walls lose their elasticity and this can lead to the bursting of that blood vessel. Brain aneurysm can occur due to the weakening if the wall of the blood vessels carrying blood and oxygen to the brain and this is life threatening. On the other hand the rupture of the aorta occurs in case of heart aneurysm which is also known as aortic aneurysm.
The wall of a blood vessel can all weaken at the same time or any side may weaken leading to the ballooning out of that part. This condition is more prevalent in people between the age of 40 and 60 and is known to occur with increasing frequency in people who smoke. High blood pressure is another risk factor. And the over consumption of fatty food can also give much to this condition because cholesterol tend to get deposited on the walls of the blood vessels further weakening them.
Aortic aneurism does not have much of typical symptoms which can lead to easy diagnosis. Most of the patients suffer from persistent headache and stiffness or pain in their neck. They can also feel fatigued or sensitive to light. Some also complain about loss of sensation as well as blurry vision while some suffer from dilated pupils or develop vomiting tendencies. However most of the cerebral aneurysms are asymptomatic and do not produce any major signs or symptoms. Patients experience loss of balance and short-term memory loss. The patient may loss the sense of perception or may experience speech related problems. Also the peripheral vision may deteriorate in some cases of enraptured brain aneurysm.
The treatment depends on the patient condition, with both invasive and non invasive procedures available. Common treatment procedures include open surgical clipping and cardiovascular therapy. Even after all these advance techniques many of patients die and others suffer from neurological deficiencies to a varying degree of severity. Ultimately the success of treatment depends upon prompt detection of cerebral aneurysm and increased awareness.
Heart aneurysm is extremely dangerous if the aorta bursts, because in that case there will be massive internal bleeding and the victim may perish within a very short time. Hence it is necessary that those in the higher risk group be screened regularly. Anyone who has crossed the age of 60 and has ever smoked is eligible for such screening. High blood pressure patients should keep their pressure level under check. Moreover diagnostic procedures such as Ultrasound, CT scan and MRI scan techniques can lead to timely detection of aortic aneurysm.
