Gout – Man Does That Hurt!

You’ve been diagnosed with Gout. Now you have to make changes to your diet. Not only are you in pain, you now have to be on a painful diet. Or do you? In this article I’m going to discuss ways to lower your pain by implementing a low purine diet. Remember – you must always discuss these issues with your health care provider in advance.

When your uric acid is high one of the symptoms is gout. This is caused by elevated purine levels. Uric acid is not used by our bodies and is filtered by the kidneys and removed in the urine. High levels of uric acid can cause pain and swelling known as gout and possibly kidney stones. By eating the right diet for gout, you can help your body get rid of the extra uric acid.

A big change to your diet gout relief program is 50% of your calorie intake needs to be carbohydrates. Eat 6-10 servings of bread or starchy food and 5 fruits and vegetables every day. Focus on low purine foods for gout relief.

The bad news, or what can I no longer eat or drink. No more alcohol. Alcohol can cause gout to flare up.

What are Low Purine Foods?

  • Breads and cereals with low fiber, white flower or refined grain.
  • Cream style soups with low-fat milk
  • Soups Made without meat extract or broth
  • Low-fat and fat-free cheeses
  • Gelatin
  • Pasta and macaroni

What beverages can I drink on a purine diet?

  • Coffee and Tea
  • Fruit Juices
  • Milk: Skim or 1% (limit to 24 ounces per day)
  • Soda Pop

To aid in reaching low purine diets you should drink plenty of fluids each day. 8 to 12 cups helps reduce kidney stone formation.

Food you must avoid when on a low purine diet for gout include:

  • Anchovies
  • Caviar
  • Game Meats
  • Meat extracts
  • Scallops and mussels

Limit these additional gout foods, except when your gout flares up in which case you should avoid them all together:

  • Asparagus
  • Red Meats not on the high purine list above
  • Cauliflower
  • Dried beans, peas, lentils
  • Mushrooms
  • Spinach
  • Wheat germ
  • Yeast

Sadly gout and kidney stones are very painful. I believe the biggest step you can make to prevent gout, kidney stones and future flare ups, is to drink plenty of fluids each day. You should consume this amount of liquid even when you don’t have gout symptoms. I have witnessed many people who consume little to no fluids that end up with gout and painful kidney stones. No trip to the doctor’s office or worse, the hospital, is worth not drinking enough fluids each day.

Drink up - just not alcohol
