For those who may not know what diverticulitis is, it is a disease that affects the colon. It affects about 10% of the population, but recent data shows a growing trend among adults between ages 40-60. The disease involves pouches that grow along the colon wall and is very painful for sufferers. Recent data shows now is the time to learn how to combat diverticulitis before it gets out of hand and comes to your door.

Scientists believe the development of diverticulitis stems largely to the adoption of western diets which among other things contain low amounts of fiber. Doctors do treat it with prescription medicines, but many have found a natural way to combat diverticulitis simply by improving their diet.

It is not overly complicated to incorporate high fiber foods on a daily basis, but a lot of high fiber foods are not the tastiest choices in the kitchen. In fact, most food found in the grocery stores suffers from the same problem-- it tastes more like cardboard than food. Like many gardeners, I have found that the problem is the food source rather than the food itself.

Why not grow vegetables in your home that are high fiber foods?

It's easy to do and doesn't require a lot of space or hard work. Indoor gardening has been a growing trend the past decade in cities around the globe. People are discovering the joy of gardening and eating the freshest food available; the food that you grew yourself.

Did you know many of the varieties of high fiber vegetables grow perfectly indoors? Here is a list of just a few veggies containing large amounts of fiber to combat diverticulitis that grow in a small space very easily in your home.

Asparagus

Broccoli

Winter squash

As you may have noticed, many of these are vegetables that you probably enjoy eating and certainly will LOVE when they are fresh from your own garden.

Another important fact, the nutritional value of vegetables is 40% higher or more than the average grocery store fresh produce. Yes, they lose that many nutrients just in the time it takes to get them from the garden to grocer. And the fiber content degrades too.

If the scientists are right and this disease will continue to grow, then you need to get proactive and start taking steps to prevent it from happening to you. I have shown you a simple solution that can combat diverticulitis and enhance your life in other ways.

If you are new to gardening, don't let it deter you from starting a small indoor garden. You will find the gardening community very helpful. There are many guides for beginners available on the internet. Start by looking until you know more about what your needs are.
