Kidney Stones Are On the Rise: Numbers Have Jumped Dramatically

Considered to be one of the most painful of all urological disorders, unfortunately, kidney stones are also one of the most common. While the majority of the stones will pass without any type of medical intervention, some may require help, including surgery in some cases. The most common type of kidney stone is a combination of calcium plus either oxolate or phosphate.

The most common kidney stone sufferer is a Caucasian man between forty and seventy while the risk for women tends to peak around the age of fifty. Research shows that if you have had one kidney stone in your lifetime, you are more likely to have another at some point. There are a number of other risk factors that might increase the risk of kidney stones.

A new study by researchers at the David Geffen School of Medicine at the University of California, Los Angeles showed that there has been a dramatic increase in the number of people with kidney stones in the last few years. The number was one in twenty in 1994 but by 2010 that number had jumped to one in eleven. Researchers, led by Dr. Charles Scales Jr., a urologist indicated that people with other conditions might have a much higher risk of developing kidney stones. Those people include obese people, people with diabetes and gout. People without these conditions are far less likely to have problems with the stones. The study was published in the journal, European Urology.

Kidney stones are completely preventable according to Dr. Scales and require a healthy, balanced diet as well as plenty of exercise. In people who have gout, diabetes or are obese, the diet may be out of balance, causing them to consume more of some of the common components that serve as the building blocks for these stones. Another risk factor, the blockage of urinary tract typically causes more symptoms before the stones become problematic.

While many people may pass a stone and never even know they had one, there are some symptoms to be aware of. Those include pain, often described as sharp and cramping in the mid or lower back, nausea, vomiting , discolored urine which may look pinkish or even bloody, burning during urination, fever and chills. All of these symptoms can possibly indicate other conditions and should be checked out by a doctor who will rule out urinary tract infections and other conditions. Stones are usually found by X ray, CT scan or by injecting dye into the veins and then tracing its path through the body.

My mother used to suffer from this. Since she started juicing and drinking warm lemon juice she hasn't had this problem any more and it has now been several years since the last occurance.

Yikes! I guess it makes sense that kidney stones increase when these other things are raging in the population - obesity, diabetes, gout... to name a few. Nice article. Informative. Interesting picture - never thought of them as having color. Red at that!

I had gall stones ( my gall bladder went wonky at 15!) that were the most horrifying things I have ever seen- the surgeon, a perfectly nice, older man, shook them in my anesthesia addled face right after surgery. Egad!

Doctors don't think sometimes, do they? One doctor did that to me in the emergency room.
