There can be several reasons for low platelet blood count and anyone that has a low count should be under doctor's care. Causes such as internal bleeding or side effects from medications can be reversed my locating and stopping the bleeding or adjusting medications. This is pretty straight forward and your doctor should be able to accomplish this rather quickly.
However many with low platelet blood count have a condition or disease where their platelets are being destroyed faster than they can be produced by their own immune system. This autoimmune disorder is called Idiopathic Thrombocytopenia Purpura or ITP for short. The immune system is overactive and creating antibodies against platelets as if they are harmful invaders.
If you are already familiar with the standard medical treatments for low platelet blood count and would like to learn about an overlooked option that is back by scientific evidence skip down to the last three paragraphs of this article.
This is a bit trickier to treat because it is not as strait forward as previously mentioned causes. The standard medical treatment is to suppress the immune system with steroids like Prednisone. This limits the production of antibodies and platelets are saved. This is effective treatment but is not without its harmful side effects.
All antibody production is suppressed so doctors try to use just enough Prednisone to increase the platelets but not so much as to destroy all antibodies. This is a tight rope to walk and at the very least your immunities are negatively impacted. Long term use can cause permanent damage to the immune system so a cat and mouse game commences. Short term use, then weaning you off the drug as soon as possible.
Another treatment is to remove the spleen. This is the organ that removes the platelets marked by the antibodies. This is only a short term solution and the body will find another means to removed the marked platelets.
Other standard treatments include filtering the blood, infusing immunoglobulins, and the use of synthetic male hormones. These, like the above come with serious side effects and don't treat the root cause of ITP, your confused immune system. Many have jumped around for years using a combination of these treatments to deal with their low platelet blood count.
Natural alternatives are often overlooked as treatment for low platelet blood Count. This is even though there is a lot of published scientific evidence to back up their effectiveness. Some doctors however are starting to realize the value of all natural treatments and are taking additional schooling in the field and adding them to their treatments.
For the most part however the established medical community dosen't take natural methods seriously. This is especially the case in the United States. I am not going to go into the reasons why, the important thing is that you educate yourself about them and take action to apply them to your condition.
