Want To Live Longer? #12 The Sunshine Vitamin

You already know that Vitamin D helps in the absorption of calcium but it actually regulates the calcium and phosphorous levels in your teeth, your bones, and your blood.

Just as the photograph shows, no matter where you are you need to go outside and have fun on a sunny day, where you can get your ten minutes of sunshine daily for your health, even if it is just on deck.

12. Vitamin D Helps With Calcium Absorption

1. It has been called “the Sunshine Vitamin”.

2. It is the only vitamin produced by the human body, and is, in reality, technically a hormone.

3. It regulates the health of 20 different tissues including your joints and central nervous system, CNS.

4. It supports the immunity of your system and is necessary in regulating insulin levels, cell growth and bone formation, keeping your bones strong.

5. It promotes the absorption of calcium and phosphorous in the intestines from food, and also promotes the re-absorption of calcium in the kidneys which gives your body the normal mineralization of bone.

6. It also prevents hypocalcemic tetany which is when your calcium is so low you have rigidity in your muscles.

7. It is a fat-soluble vitamin which means if you have too much in your system it may become toxic.

8. It is required for the regulation of the heartbeat, to protect you against muscle weakness, for your immune system, proper thyroid function, normal blood clotting, and prevention of osteoarthritis, osteoporosis, hypocalcemia, breast cancer, and colon cancer.

Levels

I have mentioned before that things change in your system around the age of 35.

Your normal requirement for men and women under the age of 35 is around 1,000 mg daily, and after the age of 35 the normal requirements change to an increased level of 2,000 mg daily.

Requirements

You can get vitamin D from your diet but it is not naturally found in many foods, other than wild salmon (with the bones), sardines, cod liver oil, and organic egg yolk, so we have an increased requirement of being in the sun every single day to acquire it from the sunshine.

The amount you need from the sun depends on the latitude and altitude at which you live on the Earth, and also very importantly how light or dark your skin color is. And no matter what your race, you still have varying degrees of the lightness or darkness of your skin color. The lighter the color of your skin the less sunlight you need to be subjected to because the rays will penetrate deeper if your skin is lighter.

The closer you live to the equator the more rays you will get from the sun.

If you live higher in altitude you will be getting more rays from the sun.

As you age you will have less of the ability to convert vitamin D from cholesterol.

Rays 101

1. Vitamin D is produced by the skin from exposure to the ultra-violet energy from the sun at a UV index of at least 3 or higher.

2. There are 3 different lengths of UV Rays that come from sunlight. They are UV-A, UV-B, and UV-C. The UV-B Rays are the ones that create Vitamin D in your body by reacting on the cholesterol found in your skin.

Food Sources

Highest on the list of sources is cod liver oil, then swordfish. Third on the list is sockeye salmon with the bones, and then on down to fortified orange juice, fortified milk, and fortified yogurt. The list then goes down to much smaller amounts in other foods.

The Conversion

Whether you absorb it from the sun or take it in a supplement or a food, it is not converted into calcium until it undergoes two reactions inside you organs.

1. In your liver vitamin D is converted into 25-hydroxyvitamin D. This is also called calcidiol.

2. Then in your kidneys 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D is formed. This is called calcitriol, and is the biologically active form.

Cholesterol 101

1. It is an important part of your physiology.

2. It is not a deadly substance.

3. It is a good substance that you need for good health.

4. There are studies proving that people with low levels have the same risks of heart disease as people with high levels.

5. There are reasons to believe that cholesterol lowering drugs and the pharmaceutical companies are the ones that influenced the lowering of the "safe level" to sell more drugs.

6. Many of these drugs are not safe and some of them, the "Statin" drugs, have been known to cause cancer in lab rats.

7. If you are taking cholesterol lowering drugs you may even be reducing your vitamin D level to an unhealthy amount as well, because your body needs it to make this vitamin.

8. Your liver makes your cholesterol.

Important! Type of Cholesterol

1. You do not want to eat animal fats that have been cooked at high temperatures.

2. This is because this cholesterol is referred to as "damaged".

3. This damaged cholesterol is bad for you unlike the normal animal fats that you can eat which when cooked properly are healthy for you.

Deficiency

1. A deficiency of vitamin D-3 can cause rickets, some forms of arthritis, periodontal disease, peripheral artery disease, high blood pressure, osteoporosis, cancer, diabetes and other auto-immune diseases.

2. Low levels in your system are associated with Multiple Sclerosis, cardiovascular disease, cancer, osteomalacia (which is a bone thinning disorder), as well as rickets.

3. A deficiency has also shown to be a risk factor in tuberculosis, HIV and even asthma. And it may play a role in influenza.

4. A deficiency is also known to be a risk for increased mortality.

Toxicity

Toxicity of this vitamin is also a known cause of high blood pressure.

You can also get some gastrointestinal symptoms of nausea, anorexia, and vomiting with this toxicity.

Outside

So today you will be out in the sun if you go to a job somewhere other than your house, or you may go out of your house to the grocery store or to the beach if you do not work or....

Surely you can think of somewhere to go, out of your house to get your daily 10 minutes of UV-B rays, index 3 or higher, of sunshine for your health, especially now that you know what can happen if you do not get your equivalent healthy amount of “the Sunshine Vitamin”.

You need to get your daily healthy fats, exercise, rest, sun exposure, nutrient dense plant-based foods, and have emotional well-being relationships with other people to find that you will be healthier.

"To Your Good Health".

Another great article about vitamin D, I penned a humours article about Vit B, in that they say it helps prevent lung cancer as well, so I gave it a twist that I could smoke as long as it was out in the sun..LOL... but an excelent article giving good advice and showing great knowledge.. thank you..

What a hoot Rob...I used to say all that stuff about my smoking and I just got back from my new docgtor here on the island and he said he cannot even see any evidence that I did smoke. Must be my singing career with all that deep circular breathing keeps me healthy we decided. Just eat organic and you can depend on the salvestrol in the organic food taking care of the cancer in your body if it ever gets out of hand 6 years before they can even detect you have cancer, while it is still in infant stage....thanks for the great words
