Borage oil is the highest known plant source for gamma linoleic acid (GLA).
#27 Borage Oil and other EFAs can keep inflammation at bay.
Essential fatty acids are those that are necessary for the body's biological reactions.
Humans and other mammals cannot synthesize essential fatty acids and therefore must be consumed in their diet. It is imperative for the proper function of their cells especially the synapses in brain cells.
We also only have two fatty acids that are truly essential. These include the Omega-3, alpha-linoleic acid and the Omega-6, linoleic acid.
There are more that are not so essential to our physiology and they are the Omega-6, gamma linoleic acid, the saturated fatty acid, which is lauric acid, and the monounsaturated fatty acid, palmitoleic acid.
You have probably never heard of the last two because they are not advertised.
The functions that these fatty acids serve are: to fight inflammation, for proper cell signaling, and behavior and mood.
Leukotrienes sustain inflammatory reactions, which is a big problem in rheumatoid arthritis. Gamma linoleic acid is anti-inflammatory, anti-thrombotic, and inhibits leukotriene synthesis so it is great for rheumatoid arthritis. Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot inside of a blood vessel.
Essential fatty acids like alpha linoleic fatty acids are involved in the functioning of your brain, your cells, and your neurons. Membrane fluidity is important in your brain functioning correctly and easily.
To keep membrane fluidity in order you must keep the proper ratio between Omega-3 and Omega-6 fatty acids. The Omega-6s should always be the lower.
Membrane fluidity keeps proper functioning of your potassium, calcium, and sodium ion channels as well as enzymes like adenylate cyclase and your serotonin levels.
Inside your neurons there is an enzyme called adenylate cyclase which plays a role in learning processes.
The ratio said to be beneficial is 1 to 1.4 for Omega-6 to Omega-3. However our western diet is usually from 10 to 1, and 30 to 1, with Omega-6 higher. This is very unhealthy as you can see by the health of the American public.
Fish oil and flaxseed oil would seem to be the best oils from animal and plant. There are also palm oil and borage oil which are other great oils for your health.
However with fish oil you have to be leery of rancid oils and with plant oils you have to make certain they are handled correctly and do not have any carcinogenic compounds in them.
Borage oil also has 55 times more Omega-3 than fish oil.
Spirulina is rich in gamma linoleic acid as well as Omega-3. There is also hemp oil which has plenty of Omega-3 and GLA. GLAs have shown anti-tumor activity.
Benefits to keeping this ratio range from better blood pressure, to avoiding certain conditions like: rheumatoid arthritis, eczema, inflammation including respiratory, developmental coordination disorders, ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, atherosclerosis, mental disorders like bipolar and depression, dementia, varicose veins, cardiovascular health, joint flexibility, cancer, blood triglyceride levels, retinal stimulation, and myocardial infarction.
Some other benefits of essential fatty acids include better blood circulation, neurotransmission, and the improving of appetite, weight, and quality of life as well as mortality.
Remember when people used to talk about taking their cod liver oil? It was always for the good of their health and in case you do not know, it had an absolutely terrible taste. It was definitely the cause of a much maligned facial expression.
Whenever I make any baked product whether it is muffins or cake I always put at least a quarter cup of milled organic flaxseed into the recipe. It just makes it healthier. Carrot cake is even better for you this way. I also have a great recipe for my apple, blueberry, flaxseed, molasses, oat bran muffins. They are fantastic like this and well-loved by all.
So when would you like to change your diet to a more quality cold pressed oil and a healthier diet without the canola oils and fried food, especially deep fried foods?
I mean, that is, if you would like to become healthier and feel better.
