Want To Live Longer? #3

Let's start with why you smoke.

3. Smoking.

You say you smoke to calm yourself down. Yet the over 125 chemicals in cigarettes actually make you more nervous. Therefore your claim that you smoke to calm yourself down is ridiculous. Now you must figure out the real reason why you smoke. Let me help you with that. You are using the nicotine to release the neurotransmitters in your brain that help you focus.

My Psychiatrist told me that Nicotine in like a baby Cocaine. Now that is a statement in itself.

Actually, it is a fact. Nicotine releases many neurotransmitters in your brain that you have trained to be released by the nicotine, instead of by the other methods that worked before you started smoking.

Now you must retrain your brain. I know this to be true and I have been through this myself. I can quit smoking and I did. But I will never smoke again because I do not want to go through that again.

I actually quit smoking for nine years and then started again because my marriage fell apart and I thought to myself, "Lose my mind? Or start smoking again to handle the stress?" I opted to start smoking again and I had to make myself. I choked on every drag after nine years of clean lungs. But I did start smoking again and then I had to quit again. I have been a nonsmoker again for over seven years this final time. I cannot even believe that I ever smoked cigarettes. It seems crazy to me now.

You must be determined to quit smoking. The first thing that I discovered right after I quit smoking was that my skin felt like baby's skin again. I was so dehydrated and I did not realize it at all. No matter how many times I read that smoking dehydrated you, I never truly understood the statement until I felt the skin on my thighs after ten days of not smoking. I was so impressed by the fact that my skin felt so much better and so unlike it had for the many, many years I smoked. It felt like skin again. It felt like a much younger skin.

You can believe all the nasty pictures of how your lungs look when you are a smoker. They are all true. And that ugly black tar in your lungs is really there. Your lungs begin to harden and not be as easily moved when you breathe, making breathing more difficult as you age.

Every day that you do not smoke adds time to your lifespan. You want to live longer? Quit smoking. Quit now.

You will only feel better every day after you quit smoking cigarettes. You must realize the stress on your esophagus, and all the cells in your body, from the smoke. Remember how it feels to smoke when you have a sore throat? Trust me, if you get throat cancer, your throat will hurt much more than that.

Smoking can also greatly increase your risk of having a heart attack. If you have a stroke you could end up a vegetable, in a bed, unable to talk, yet knowing things you want, and you will not be able to communicate them. Is that what you want? I thought you wanted to live longer. Then you must quit smoking, and you will.

Your friends who do not smoke will be ever so grateful that you quit. It is only making their belongings smell bad and making them worry about you.

You are being damaged by all of the chemicals in the cigarettes as well, as if the tar and nicotine isn't bad enough. All those free radicals they are producing in your body making your body have to work even harder to be healthy.

I have spared you the picture of the lung that is black when taken out of the dead person who died from lung cancer, and just put up the picture of a lung with a cancer tumor in it.

When you make the decision to quit. Your determination will get you through but you must learn some facts.

1. Smoking is a psychological habit.

2. It takes 28 days to break a psychological habit.

3. Every time you smoke is a different habit.

4. You must retrain your brain.

There are so many programs now to quit smoking that I know you can find one of them to help you. If you want to quit smoking you can. You can get help with homeopathic remedies that will calm you down while you are going through withdrawal. Hylands Homeopathic makes something called Calms and a stronger one named Calms Forte which might be of great help to you during this time. They are natural herbs and made of Oats, Chamomile, Passionflower, and Hops. Calms Forte is for sleeplessness and Calms is for nervousness. However, I took 4 Calms Forte with breakfast and 4 with dinner during the first few months of my quitting smoking, and it helped me greatly. It takes the edge off, especially when you are in this stressed state of confusion and lack of focus. Yet these herbs give you absolutely no physiological feeling of drowsiness or feeling woozy like medication for nervousness does from the doctor like Valium or Librium, or whatever doctors are giving out these days. I believe in quitting the nicotine habit, not getting an electric cigarette to lengthen the withdrawal process.

If you want to live longer, you must quit smoking cigarettes. It is that simple.

Let's meet here again tomorrow to discuss vitamin C and your health. (It will also help you during the tobacco/nicotine withdrawal stage.)

Breathe easy and live longer.

Very good article on smoking. Some people seem to be able to handle it. I don't know what makes the difference. My friend's grandmother smoked all the time and she lived to 93. Her passing was not related to smoking. Now my friend thinks he's immune. I've never smoked myself, but I lost my mother, my dad, and older sister to health issues resulting from chain smoking: heart disease and lung cancer. Because it cost me 3 members of my family, I don't like cigarettes at all. I would think that upsetting the people who love you would be good incentive to give up the weed.

Have to agree with you on that Joan. It's the one habit that has the potential to do a lot of harm to the people we love. Not for me! Thanks for the article Sister Kaite. Some strong words but you come from a good standpoint of one that has been there.

Thank you Heather. And Good for you for being strong about not smoking. So much bad karma must come from the companies that produce it...I do not understand why it is legal.

Thank you so much Joan. An addiction does not constitute good mental decisions. It has control over thoughts like that. Amazing how strong addictions are. Psychological in nature. You are very smart not to smoke.

You are right Joan...I must have missed your comment on this one...You are so sweet....and you are right ...I would think that myself but when my family would say that to me....I still could not quit...It was a necessity in how my brain worked and how I dealt with my emotions which was not good...I did not have a handle on them but I needed lots of things. I needed something for anxiety and depression then and did not know it....I may have been able to quit sooner if they had given me the medication I have now...I tried for ten years before anything came out on the market to help a person quit......the industry did not care about people quitting then...but now I have so all is better....
