It is ridiculously amazing that so many people do not know where to go to find information to get rid of simple daily health problems like leg cramps.

Doctors do not inform their patients anything about the nutrients they need for daily health performance, and I certainly do not understand why.

You are what you eat.

There is magnesium in chocolate so you would think more people would know about it.

5. Magnesium, the mineral in chocolate.

Magnesium is involved in every chemical reaction, which means bodily process on a cellular level, in your body. If you had any idea about how many reactions it takes on a minute-to-minute basis for your body to function you would truly be in shock. That is over 300 biochemical reactions happening in your body.

You probably did not even realize that half of the magnesium in your body is in your bones. The other half is in your cells and tissues. There is the matter of a 1% magnesium level in your blood that is kept 1% very stringently.

You are beginning to see why everyone could take a mineral supplement daily and get a good benefit from it.

Yes the leg cramp symptom is because you do not have enough magnesium in your system. So when you supplement with this mineral your leg cramps go away. Seems like a very simple process to me.

You need magnesium for your body to process ATP, adenosine triphosphate, to make energy.

Even your bones need magnesium as a nutrient to make strong healthy bones.

Also affected can be your blood pressure, but from a lack of magnesium in your system. A deficiency can cause your blood pressure to become too high.

Your body needs magnesium to make new cells, to promote relaxation of the nerves and of the muscles, in the clotting of blood, in energy production, in activating your B vitamins, for insulin secretion and insulin function, to assist in the absorption of vitamin C, potassium and calcium, and more.

Milk of Magnesia has been around for decades as a laxative liquid. Magnesium is an ingredient in it because magnesium is a laxative. It is found in dark green leafy vegetables. Do you eat dark green leafy vegetables daily? Most people do not.

Chocolate is a laxative because it has a good quantity of this mineral in it. Just like Ex-Lax is a laxative and comes in a chocolate flavor because of the magnesium in chocolate.

In reality if you have a problem with digestion all you need to do is take a calcium magnesium citrate supplement daily and your problem will go away. You will have a very normal bowel movement daily by taking this supplement. Magnesium citrate is necessary for proper digestion. Proper digestion can be regulated naturally in this way without the use of mineral oil or other laxatives.

I have many friends who are still grateful for my giving them this knowledge. Proper digestion is a major part of your health and if yours is not working properly you are not in good health, and it can cause many other health issues for you.

Magnesium deficiency is related to a few illnesses some of which include asthma, diabetes, osteoporosis, and may result in fatigue, nervousness, heart problems, high blood pressure, insomnia, muscle weakness as well as muscle cramping.

The symptoms of migraines, fibromyalgia and PMS can all be shortened with this mineral supplement. When I had migraines I took a calcium magnesium citrate supplement to get rid of them. As long as I took this supplement the migraines did not appear.

It plays a role in preventing stroke and heart attacks only if the magnesium in the body is in the correct amount and not too much or too little

Alcoholism can also cause a deficiency.

Magnesium citrate is a more bioavailable form that the other forms used in supplements so this is the form you should look for when buying a supplement.

Some research has even shown that magnesium deficiency is correlated to major depression.

Magnesium ions are basically essential to all the cells of all living organisms known today and to the chemistry of that life.

When taking a calcium supplement, in which citrate is a better form for calcium supplements as well because it does not plug up your renal functions like carbonate and other forms, your supplement should have at least half as much magnesium citrate in it because calcium depletes magnesium. Therefore you must also restock what you have depleted by taking the calcium.

Magnesium is the mineral that is involved in keeping your heart rhythm steady, keeping a healthy immune system, keeping bones strong, and maintaining normal muscle function and normal nerve function.

As you can see there are many, many reasons for supplementing this mineral. These supplements have also been cited as helping Restless Leg Syndrome.

Cravings for certain foods can be because you are deficient in what is in that food. For instance a chocolate craving is for the magnesium in the chocolate.

I eat Nutella on a regular basis for the nutrients in the cocoa and the nutrients in the hazelnut of which magnesium is in good quantity. The Nutella spread can be eaten spread on a piece of bread. It is a great nutritious snack for anyone.

I can also eat chocolate covered cashews as a nutritious snack for the protein and the magnesium. This is a great snack because you are getting protein with your sugar that you are used to getting and that will make it digest better than just eating something sugary without protein.

There are many foods that are nutritious instead of snacking on chips and soda. Even Greek yogurt can be a good snack. Cereals, without sugar, but with dried fruits, bananas, or fresh fruits in them are good for anyone to eat as a snack, for those of you who eat processed foods.

If you have eggs for breakfast, you can put vegetables in them like: tomatoes, broccoli (which I used to put in scrambled eggs is not the best veggie to use as you do not get the total benefit from either when they are eaten together), onions, green peppers, and more. And you can put salsa on the eggs when they are done.

You can also skip the morning toast (with butter and/or jelly) to get less carbohydrate and sugar calories, or you can just skip the jelly.

You can eat fruits like: cherries, cantaloupe, watermelon, bananas, dried apricots, apples and more, all for healthy snacks. I like to eat bananas or peaches with milk on them, as a snack. Some of my friends like to freeze their bananas, then they put chocolate on them.

Bing cherries are helpful if you get gout. It is said that cantaloupe should be eaten by itself for better digestion. Watermelon is always good for you and contains potassium, vitamin A, and also magnesium. You know that bananas are good for you and have lots of potassium in them but did you know they also have magnesium and phytosterols. Dried apricots are very good for you and have tons of vitamin A and potassium in them but also magnesium. Apples have lots of potassium and only a little magnesium but they are known to be so good as to keep the doctor away if you eat them everyday.

Fruits high in magnesium are: avocados, bananas, blackberries, black currant, bread fruit, cherimoya, dates, guava, kiwi, loganberries, mulberries, passion fruit, pomegrante, prickly pear, raspberries and watermelon.

Vegetables high in magnesium are: amaranth leaves, artichoke, butternut squash, french beans, lima beans, okra, peas, spirulina, swiss chard, as are most beans.

Nuts high in magnesium are: almonds, amaranth, brazil nuts, buckwheat, cashews, oats, peanuts, pine nuts, pignolias, pumpkin seeds, quinoa, rye, wheat (durum, hard red, hard white).

If you eat mostly vegetables then you will get more magnesium into your diet and of course the vegetables will give you all around better health. The more dark green leafy vegetables you eat the better is it will be for your health.

You just cannot do better than to eat organic vegetables all the time, and less and less meat and grain, and even fish is better for you than red meat.

By following this regimen you can only improve your health and you might even get well.

You got my interest with the chocolate, I like chocolate ice cream can I get the magnesium from there. I knew that a magnesium deficiency could cause cramps but wasn't aware of the other issues it caused as well. I will be sure to keep some chocolate handy in case of cramps - well that's my excuse anyway! Gayle
