What Are Some Of the Best Foods to Eat During A Flare Up Of Crohns Disease?

For people who have Crohn's disease, food is a gamble, one that is often too painful to deal with. Flare ups, which mark the absolute worst of the disease can leave a person feeling weak, ill and in too much pain to even think about eating anything at all. If that flare goes on for too long, the potential for serious health risks increases dramatically. Even when you are not feeling at your best, it is important to eat foods, especially foods that are easy to digest. Your body relies on its food intake to help heal itself.

Certain foods, which are often considered unhealthy in other situations are suggested during flares because they are easier to digest. Foods that are easily digested are important because it allows the gastrointestinal tract the time to heal itself. Those foods also provide fast energy and the calories to keep up the body's strength. Some of the suggestions include regular pasta, skipping the whole wheat and fiber boosted options which can be hard to digest. Other foods that are good to eat during a flare include cream of rice cereal, prepared with milk rather than water for additional nutrients and protein unless there is a problem with lactose intolerance which can also increase the risk of Crohn's flares. Another prime source of calcium without the worry of lactose issues is slices of hard cheeses. Yogurt can also be eaten but avoid any variety with large chunks of fruits on the bottom which can exacerbate stomach issues.

Bananas, which are often suggested for people with other stomach issues, are a bland food that is not only easy to digest but a prime source of potassium.A baked potato with the skin removed also provides this nutrient and can be well tolerated. Mashed potatoes can also be substituted instead of baked.Applesauce may also be eaten and is easier on the digestion than regular apples because the fiber has already been broken down.

Other bland foods that can be eaten during flares include cooked carrots, bland cereal (low fiber varieties only) and fatty fish like salmon and others. It is important to watch food preparation for the fish, however. Skinless poultry like turkey and chicken are also good suggestions and can be prepared in ways that will not cause stomach upset. Avoid too much seasoning and do not cook using a lot of oil. Stick to bland foods during flares so that your stomach and GI tract can heal and you will feel better, faster.
