12x16 Shed Plans Are These For You?

If you think you do not have the time to build a shed, a set of free 12x16 shed plans can change your mind. A set of easy-to-follow plans can easily turn the dream of a storage shed, private backyard office or studio work space into a reality. Here is all you need to know about constructing a top-notch shed.

Foundations

Factors such as the overall size of the shed will dictate the type of foundation. Large size sheds like the 12 x 16 are best suited to a permanent solution such as a poured slab or pier foundation. To lay this type of foundation properly, one must first dig to the frost line. This will ensure the building does not settle an undue amount given the naturally occurring cycles of freezing and thawing.

Other types of foundations are also reasonable for some sheds. A skid foundation, where rows of timber planks are set in parallel lines, is one type of foundation built directly onto the ground. The same concept can be accomplished with a line of concrete blocks instead of timber planks. A floor is then constructed on top of this floating foundation.

Roofs

One of the more popular shed designs on the market today is the gable barn shed. The arched gable roof provides a good deal of interior room that most people choose to use as a loft storage area. A sloped roof that falls between 40 and 45 degrees is recommended for gable roof styles.

Getting the right slope to the roof is just one step to proper roof construction. The roof trusses must also be spaced appropriately to ensure an even distribution of weight across the structure. Doing these things right will ensure the roof does not collapse under a heavy snow or rainfall.

Budgets

Like any consumer product, there are places to splurge and places to save when building a shed. The best places to save are on the shingles and siding. For the most part, these are cosmetic features that do not require the most expensive product to achieve high quality and function.

On the other hand, it is never wise to cut corners when it comes to the shed floor. Only the best materials should be used for both the floor frame and the plywood deck. When it comes to these materials, the best bet for use is pressure treated lumber.

This type of lumber is a natural combatant against wood rot due to exposure to moisture. Even when a shed is located in a fairly dry area, naturally occurring moisture in the air can lead to a weakling over time. Insects are another consideration for pressure treated lumber. In areas prone to wood boring pests and termites, pressure treated lumber adds another layer of protection.

Following these guidelines will ensure a top-quality shed is built from top to bottom. Taking the time to set the foundation and the roof means everything in between will also fall into place. Take a look around at free 12x16 shed plans, and get started building your dream shed today.
