If you look around your home it is really hard to ignore the fact that a large proportion of the furnishings are made of wood. There are tables, chairs, cupboards, dressing tables, stools and numerous other items. The majority of them have been bought at some point and will have no doubt cost you a substantial amount of money. You may believe that you have no alternative but to pay the exaggerated prices that the retailer is asking and simply accept it as a fact of life.

It does not have to be this way. You could in fact fairly easily manufacture at least some of these items yourself!

Carpentry is an absorbing and interesting pastime and it is surprising how inexpensively you can make many of the items you would usually go out and buy. It does not matter if you have no experience. A lot of the smaller projects require only the most basic of woodworking skillscan be undertaken by someone with only elementary carpentry skills.

It is necessary that you have at your disposal at least some carpentry tools but in the initial stages you should only purchase the basics such as hammer, saw, screw driver, drill, measuring tape, tri square, spirit level and perhaps a plane. It is also recommended that you acquire clamps of some description to hold the timber securely when you are screwing or gluing them together. The size and style of the clamps you need will depend on what precisely it is you are making.

It will become necessary to get hold of other tools as your interest in woodwork develops and you become more accomplished. Keep in mind that once you have bought your tools they will last for many years providing you look after them correctly.

Prior to starting your first real project it is essential that you become familiar with all of the tools you will be using. Possibly the most difficult of the tools to master is the hand saw. Many individuals find it difficult to get an accurate straight vertical cut at first. It is however just a matter of practice and you will find that you get better as time goes on.

If you are a complete novice you can practice on any pieces of waste lumber that you can find.

Your first project ought to be a fairly straightforward one. If you start out by building only basic items (such as shelving) you will find that, in a lot of instances, it is just a matter of sawing your timber to the correct length and then joining them together in some way. As a rule simple woodworking projects are likely to be either glued or screwed together. Avoid trying to make difficult joints (dovetails etc) until you have become proficient as they do take some time to master.

If you are searching for woodworking ideas and plans for easy woodworking projects that you can undertake they are available very cheaply on the internet. Woodwork projects, including the uncomplicated ones, must be thought about carefully before you begin.
