Easy Home Automation - How Insteon Automation Works
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

If you have never experienced the new generation of home automation possibililties, you should take a look. If you thought home automation was a futuristic concept that only nerds and geeks would like, think again. If you thought home automation required professional installers and costs thousands of dollars, you're wrong.

Today's easy home automation networks are affordable and practical solutions for making home living more convenient and safer. And if you're a DIYer who can read, understand and follow directions, you can install it yourself.

Insteon home automation network is a case in point. Suppose you were vacationing far away from home and wanted to check the temperature in your house to be sure your heating system is working properly. With a few touches on your web-enabled smartphone you contact your Insteon home automation network and get a temperature reading -- even though you are thousands of miles away. While you are at it you water your tomatoes with a few touchstrokes.

How does an Insteon home network work?

An Insteon network consists of several modular devices. They can be responders -- for example, add an affordable plug-in Insteon lamp dimmer, an appliance switch, or a thermostat on your own schedule. Or controllers that send original command signals. Or dual-band access points -- to make sure signals are received throughout your home.

An Insteon controller in your home receives your command via Internet. It broadcasts the signal throughout your house over a designated radio frequency (RF) and over your existing house wiring. An Insteon-compatible thermostat with a RF module is a part your network, You check the existing house temperature and reset it if you wish.

Some of the devices are dual-band -- they receive and send both RF and powerline signals. Each Insteon-compatible device is a repeater, that is it receives and repeats its signal three times. This makes your Insteon network both reliable and flexible. As you add Insteon-compatible devices in different locations in your home, your network becomes even more reliable.

Take a look at an animated video shows how Insteon home automation works.

You can control many different home functions with confidence, making your network more reliable with each added function. Moreover, each Insteon device has a unique ID number so that if there are any hackers close by they can't break into your network and take control.

Remote lamp control is an easy way to get your home automation network started. If you already have an iPhone or Android phone and Internet service, all you need are a controller that hooks into your router and plugs into a nearby wall outlet, and a couple of Insteon-compatible light switches. I suggest adding a couple of dual-band (RF and powerline) lamp dimmers to make your network even more reliable.
