Knowing how to get started woodworking can be difficult if you have never done it before. There is equipment to buy, setting up your workshop, and learning the craft of woodworking.

Maybe you should learn first then buy the equipment and materials. How many saws and what kind are you going to need to get started? This can be overwhelming to say the least.

Well, don't give up before you even get started. You can be a woodworking craftsman without spending a fortune and having to take two years of classes.

Whether you know it or not, you have the key ingredient in learning this age old craft.....true desire and heart. These traits will show in your projects from the very first one you do to those items you produce as a master craftsman.

Here are some points that will come in handy as you begin this new adventure in becoming a woodworking craftsman.

  • Select a simple wood project. This could be a shelf, plaque, spice rack, key and mail holder, or a crafty cutout. Purchasing a plan package with downloadable woodworking plans will give you flexibility of projects and skill levels.
  • Buy tools as you need them. There is no reason to go out and buy up a bunch of hand and power tools right off the bat. You are going to find that there are certain tools that you use all the time and some that you won't even touch.
  • Be careful with power tools. They can be very dangerous and you should be aware of the safety precautions that need to be followed. If you don't think it's safe, then don't do it. By all means, don't forget to wear your safety glasses.
  • Start out by using softwoods. Pine or spruce are easy to work with and you will be able to become more skilled before moving on to the more expensive exotic hardwoods.
  • Start learning with a Scroll Saw. One of the best ways to get a feel for woodworking is to start with a Scroll Saw. Heck, it is a relatively safe tool to use, runs quietly and requires very little space. You will be quite astonished by what you are able to do with a Scroll Saw.
  • Experience a new woodworking technique with each project. The best way to become a master woodworker know all the techniques of woodworking and even developing some of your own.
  • Learn woodworking terms. The jargon used in woodworking can be a foreign language to you at first, but once you pick up on, well everything starts making sense. With this knowledge you will feel like you can conquer the world of woodworking.

The best way to begin woodworking is to just do it. Learn as you go and you will be a natural in no time flat. You don't need a big fancy shop with every woodworking tool you can think of. You can start with a few items and an attitude that everything does not have to turn out perfect. The craft of woodworking is an ongoing learning process. The most important item is that you enjoy what you are doing. With that said, go ahead and get started woodworking!
