How to Install An Insinkerator Garbage Disposal

This article will walk you threw how to install An InSinkErator garbage disposal on your kitchen sink. Installing these units is very simple and compared to other dirty plumbing jobs this one is a pleasure. I chose this “How To” article focused on the InSinkErator food waste disposal because they are the most common units in America and very dependable. The steps for this install also apply to many off brand disposals as well.

Let’s jump into and start underneath the kitchen sink. For this example we will assume we are changing out an existing InSinkErator garbage disposal for a like model. We have everything cleared out from under the sink, and a new garbage disposal on stand by. First thing you need to do is disconnect the electrical power; most unplug at an outlet located in the cabinet. Next disconnect the drain piping from the outlet of the disposal.

The next step is to loosen the retaining nut connected the disposal body to the kitchen sink. Let me explain what exactly is going on at this connection. It looks complicated but, it is a beautifully simple design. There is a steel flange assembly that compresses on to the sink. Once this flange is installed the disposal has a metal collar that rotates at the top of the unit. The idea is to lift the disposal to the flange and lock into place with its metal collar. There is a black gasket already on the garbage disposal, when compressed makes a seal. This being said, loosen the collar on the old unit and drop the disposal from the sink.

Now that the old garbage disposal is out of the way remove the existing flange from the sink and clean any putty from the sink. Next take the flange that comes with your new appliance and take apart, noting how the pieces are configured. They will need to go onto the sink in the same fashion. Take the collar and place a bead of plumbers putty on the bottom side and place collar thru the sink hole. Take the remaining flange parts and join together under the sink. It is important to note that you will need to loosen the three bolts on the flange. Assemble all the parts and secure the snap ring that comes with it onto the flange. In order to get the snap ring on you may need to press on the collar compress the putty. Once you get the snap ring on, you can tighten the three bolts, which will compress the flange onto the sink.

If you get past this part, you have gotten threw the hard part. This task takes a few times to get the technique down. From here you can take the new garbage disposal and secure it to the flange. Connect your drain piping to the new disposal as necessary. Every situation is different so I won’t go into depth on this. Also remember to use the gasket connecting the drain to the appliance. There is a black gasket that comes with the new unit. It goes between the disposal and your pipe. Many people screw this up, and it is really a simple fix. Also, remember to knock out the plug on the disposal if you want to hook up you dishwasher drain to the disposal. Once you have the drain hooked up you are ready to plug in the electrical cord on the appliance and test for function and leaks.

This is the basic steps for installing the InSinkErator garbage disposal. There are several models of these disposals but the connections are all the same. The bodies are different sizes so you have to pay attention of your drain connections and how all of this will fit. The steps outlined apply to many different garbage disposal brands and some even have the same flange assembly. Have fun with it and enjoy your new garbage disposal.
