We become accustomed to the way our houses smell, so we don’t notice if the indoor air is stale and musty, or fresh and light. However, these items can becomes costly overtime, and can also be a little too over-powering to our senses. For those of us searching for holistic, homemade natural air fresheners, this is the right place to start! Continue reading to learn how to make your own air and room scents, at a price that can please any wallet.
Homemade Air Freshener
Before starting, think about what type of smell or scent you are after. You can consider the seasons when choosing a smell; for example using apples and cinnamon for holiday seasons, and citrus-like smells for spring and summer. Be sure the room you are “scenting” is taking on an appropriate smell. You don’t want your bathroom smelling like cupcakes, and your kitchen smelling like pine cones. Once you have coordinated a scent schedule, you can begin gathering all the wonderful and effective ingredients that make a chemical-free air freshener for your home. Here is a list of ingredients to consider, shop for, and purchase:
• Lemons
• Whole Cloves
• Oranges
• Cinnamon Sticks
• Almond, Coconut, or Vanilla Extract
• Fresh Peppermint or Extract
• Rosemary Sprigs
• Whole Black Peppercorns
• Tea Bags
• Fresh Basil
• Apple Peels
• Ginger
Simple bring a pot of water to boil, and add a few of these ingredients to coordinate a pleasing scent for your home. Combine vanilla extract and water in a spray bottle for a handheld air freshener; or combine one lemon slice, rosemary sprigs, and a teaspoon of vanilla extract. Other recipes are as follows:
Amaretto Orange
One orange, sliced and one tablespoon of almond extract
Autumn Wonder
One orange sliced, five cinnamon sticks, and two tablespoons whole cloves
Minty Sweet
Two limes sliced, one teaspoon vanilla extract, and one teaspoon peppermint extract
Once your water is boiling in a small sauce pan, add the chosen ingredients and lower to a simmer. Simmer for hours on end if you like, adding more water so the ingredients do not burn. When you are finished, simply jar up the rest of the liquid and place in a mason jar. You can re-use at any time!
