How to Remove Fresh Oil Stains From Cloths

I know what you are thinking. "Remove oil stains? Duh, just use cornstarch and dish soap." When my favorite white gym towel got some oil stains, that was my first go to remedy. However, I didn't have cornstarch

Let me explain my predicament and my whole reason for writing today's article. During a workout session the other day, my favorite white gym towel got some oil stains. Don't ask me where the oil came from because the answer will be I don't know. Now, it being my favorite gym towel and all, I was distraught. My gym trainer was quick to quip in how difficult it is to remove oil stains especially on whites.

Being the 'tech-savvy' person I am, I did a Google search and found great information on how to remove oil stains. Almost all the information I got said use cornstarch and dish soap. I had dish soap but didn't have cornstarch and didn't want the stain to wait until the next time I did a run to the store. Naturally, that really bummed me out Then, my creative brain started going through its creativity motions. My inner voice asked; "Other than using cornstarch and dish soap, is there no other way to remove a fresh oil stain."

That's all it took to discover what I'm about to share with you: To remove fresh oils stains from cloths, whites or otherwise, use vinegar, any detergent powder, and salt. Let me outline the process for you.

Step #1

The first step is to soak your stained cloth in warm or cold water with any detergent powder you favor added on and let this sit for about 10-20 minutes.

Step #2

After 10-20 minutes of soaking, remove your cloth from the detergent water. Isolate the stained parts (my towel only had two big stains). Pour a tablespoon of vinegar onto the stain and sprinkle some salt over it. Let this sit for a 2-5 minutes.

Step #3

Using an old toothbrush, massage away the fresh oil stain while sprinkling the detergent water on the stained spot. Be very careful not to spread the stain further. Side note: I used the toothbrush for a few seconds and was afraid it would spread the stain. So instead, I used my hands to completely isolate the stain and massage it away.

Note: Remember to use the detergent water as you massage the stain away. Preferably, the towel should be soaked in your basin or whatever while you work on the stained parts.

Step #4

The stain should now start to wash away. If some parts of the stain are stubborn, pour a teaspoon of vinegar over it and immediately start to wash. This should dissolve the oil and completely remove the stain. After the stain completely dissolves, remove the cloth from the detergent water and wash it according to the washing instructions label. My towel label said hand wash so I simply washed it in the same detergent water and rinsed it well.

Step #5

After washing and rinsing, do not machine or sun dry the cloth. Instead, dry at room temperature. This is to make sure any stains you missed do not settle in. That's it.

Note: I have only tried this on a 20-30 minutes fresh oil stains. I am not sure if it works on a settled oil stains. But hey, it costs you anything to try. If you do try it on a settled oil stain, please let me know if it works.

Final thoughts

By experimenting, we discover new things. My discovery of this odd but welcome fresh oil stain removal process came about simply because I didn't have one of the key ingredients many articles say I should use.
