How to Stop Snow From Interupting Your Satellite Service

The Issue with Satellite Television (Dish Network or Direct TV)

I live in the north west region of the United States. When we got satellite television I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. This dish TV just couldn’t be beat. The picture being a digital feed beat out cable by a long shot and there was nothing nicer than seeing that picture on my 42” HDTV... that is until the snow started coming down.

The snow did not really bother my picture at all, it was the accumulation in the dish that constantly had my wife saying, “we’re going back to cable”. That kept sending me out in the snow armed with my paint roller extender with a towel wrapped on the end to remove the snow from the dish. In retrospect it must have been a pretty funny site from my neighbors point of view.

So I started searching for a solution. Who would have thought that they made satellite dish heaters and satellite covers for satellite television? They even had different sizes to fit both Dish Network’s or the Direct TV’s satellite dishes. There was only one issue. The dish heaters and covers were not cheap... well at least not my kind of cheap (free). So the question was, how to make a satellite cover just using the materials I have around the house.

The Solution

Being the creative guy I am, this is where my wife starts to cringe, I came up with a solution that has given me ZERO issues since installing in October of last year (its the end of February now). No need to go to your satellite dish parts store, I had everything I needed right here at the house.

So here is the material list:

  1. Tape- the type of tape really doesn’t matter just make sure it will keep sticking in cold weather. I used some aluminum tape I had lying around that I knew I would not be using. Not the most aesthetic choice as you will see but it turned out unique to say the least.
  2. Plastic Trash Bag - I chose to use a black one for its heat absorbing qualities and would recommend you do the same.

That's all the materials, if you don’t have a way to get to the dish on the roof then I’m willing to bet one of your neighbors has a ladder. They say that a picture is worth a thousand words. I’ll let you be the judge.

As you can see the black garbage bag was pulled over the dish. The plastic does not interfere with the signal in any way. On the back of the dish is where I got creative with the aluminum tape. In retrospect I would use a black colored tape, having a dish on your roof isn’t the prettiest thing to start with. Good thing it is on the back side of my roof where its not seen.

This homemade satellite dish cover was just the right price for me (free) and took a total of about 20 minutes while saving me countless times going out into the snowy weather with my paint roller in hand. I hope it makes your life easier too!

Street Talk

We had snow the other night and my husband had to go sweep off the dish to get the signal back. I like your idea. I was thinking about spraying it with cooking spray but do not know how that would affect the dish. I think I will follow your plan.

If you have any issues let me know and we can troubleshoot it. Our dish guy said the things like cooking spray or RainX would attract insects that would stick to the dish. I don't think I mentioned that the picture was taken after we had 71 MPH winds the day before. It doesn't appear to have stretched out the plastic at all.
