Ideas for Shed Plans 10x12

Ramps are often overlooked at the time of construction, but they are incredibly useful additions to a structure built from shed plans 10x12. Adding a ramp makes moving heavy, wheeled vehicles like snow blowers and lawn mowers in and out of the shed much easier. Ramps also help with smaller items like wheelbarrows and motorcycles. To build a quality ramp, you will need to invest in a few additional building supplies.

Building Supplies

For the ramp surface, purchase pressure-treated plywood for the slope itself and two timbers to serve as edges along the sides. The timbers will serve as a sort of curb to prevent wayward items from falling to the ground.

Another suggested item is either a large piece of rubber tread or textured outdoor paint. Covering the surface of the ramp with one of these items will ensure the ramp has plenty of traction. An ounce of prevention in this form is worth a pound of cure to avoid falls on damp or wet surfaces.

Because a ramp supports a good deal of weight, add additional support with triangular-timbers placed at the back of the ramp. If heavy equipment will be stored in the shed and moved in an out on a regular basis, you may also want to consider reinforcing the ramp with cross braces positioned between the timber supports. And don’t forget a flat board or other plank to seal the supports into a nice wedge.

Just as local building codes provide guidelines for overall shed construction, they will also dictate the specifications for adding a ramp to a structure. Here are two basic building considerations to keep in mind:

Slope: A gentle slope of 20 to 30 degrees from the shed door to the ground will typically suffice. A good rule of thumb is to build a ramp with one inch of slope per every eight inches of length.

Clearance: Remember, equipment like lawn mowers need room for their undercarriages to freely move in and out of the shed. Build in a minimum of six inches between the bottom of the door and the ramp to allow for easy clearance.

Managing Cost

Of course, adding a ramp will add to the overall cost of building a shed which can run anywhere from hundreds of dollars up to the thousands. There are ways to cut costs to keep the project within budget, however. Just remember to take care not to cut in places that will not end up costing more in the long run.

For instance, only pressure treated lumber should be used for the floor and foundation. It is more expensive, but it is the only true way to protect against moisture causing undue wood rot. Also, consider spending a bit more on a good set of plans. Quality plans can save time and money on wasted material.

Protecting the wood with a coat of paint or stain will keep it looking nice as well as protected from the elements. And during the building process, rent or borrow instead of purchasing power tools. In no time, your shed plans 10x12 will turn into an enjoyable backyard bungalow.
