Why do you need plans for woodworking! Well to put it bluntly it starts with the Measure Twice Cut Once Principle. If you just start doing a woodworking project without any plans or correct measurements you are bound to make mistakes which could end up being costly, especially if you are using expensive wood. So where do you start when tackling a woodworking project, especially if you are new to this exciting hobby. Obviously you will have an idea of what you will want to make, whether it is a table, chair bookcase or jewelry box.
How do you start when making plans for a woodworking project. Here are three tips for starting:
1. Firstly you need to know the size of the item which you are making. If it is a table for instance you need to have the height correct, so that people can sit comfortably. Make sure that your measurements are correct and all fit together, otherwise you will have to start over or at least remake a portion of the planned item.
2. Secondly you need to be sure that you have the right tools to be able to complete the project, it will only be frustrating if you make a start but are unable to finish the project because you need some tool, especially if it is a basic tool, which you ought to have. If you are just starting out and do not have a lot of tools, get in touch with woodworking clubs in your community which will have beginners courses where you will be able to get acquainted with tools used and slowly be able to build up your own toolkit.
3. Lastly you will need the correct wood or materials with which you will do your woodworking project. The type of wood you are going to use will depend on the project as well as your budget. If you are building something which will be used everyday for work purposes then you will want to build it with cheap but sturdy materials. If the project is for your home you will want to use more decorative materials and possibly solid wood if it is for a cabinet or table for instance.
So you are going to start with a woodworking project, the best advice anyone can give you is to sit down for a while and plan the project. Figure out what you need to complete the task, taking the above three points into consideration and you will most certainly have a successful project. It is always a good idea to follow the old axiom, Measure Twice, Cut Once when planning a woodworking project, so take the time and ensure that your next woodwork project is a successful one.
yes for sure you cannot do much of any kind of building without a set of plans, not much of a furniture builder myself but worked in contruction for years as a carpenter, no plans do nothing, plans get to work...this is the only way.I agree.Thats my take. Tim
