Pros And Cons Of DIY Projects

The DIY Boom

Back in the 90’s if you wanted something, you went out and bought it. The economic boom in 1991 gave people the ability to be more comfortable financially. Then in 2001 the tables turned back around. The recession, combined with astronomical gas prices and a crashing housing market, took away this financial freedom.

Americans in the upper-middle class now saw themselves in the middle, or even the lower-middle class. With tighter budgets, paying someone to come in and remodel your bathroom became a luxury many people couldn’t afford. It was cheaper to do these projects by yourself. Thus, the popularity of DIY projects exploded. The ability to customize and add a bit of your own little creativity turned many Americans into DIY lovers. Today even those that could afford to have everything done for them are choosing to DIY.

Like with any big trend or idea, there are pros and cons to DIY projects.

PROS:

• Save money with no labor costs. You still have to by the tools and parts, but you don’t have to pay labor fees to have someone do your project.

• You can add your own touch. DIY projects can be customized and tweaked to your likings and needs.

• When someone is hired to do your project. It can be difficult to get them to understand exactly what you want.

• They can boost your self-confidence. Nothing makes you feel better about yourself than having accomplished a task.

• Along the way you’ll learn new skills and use skills you never knew you had.

• Work is done on your own time. You don’t have to be at the house between certain hours or worry about what workers are doing when you’re not home.

• They’ll boost your popularity. When your neighbors and friends see what you have done, they’ll spend more time with you while they build up the confidence to ask you to do a similar project for them.

CONS:

• They can be dangerous. You might need to lift heavy objects or use power tools that you’ve never used before.

• Quality may suffer. You’re not a trained professional. What you think will hold, may collapse sometime in the near future.

• There are regulations that may prohibit you from doing your project. Some states require you to be a certified technician to do some projects.

• Nothing looks worse than an unfinished project.

• You may not want that extra popularity or people asking you to do similar projects for them.

• If you don’t like the finished project, no one is going to come in and fix it for you.

• If you make a mistake, you have to replace the parts with your own money.

• DIY projects can be very time consuming.

Choosing A Project

This article isn’t meant to scare you away from DIY projects. They can be quite rewarding if you pick the right project. Do an assessment of your skills, available time, and current needs/wants. Pick a project that fits your assessment well. It could be better to start with small projects and work your way up.

Useful Inventions

Due to the high popularity of DIY, both large corporations and young entrepreneurs are constantly thinking of products that can make DIY projects possible. For example flat extension cords let you run a power source safely on the floor or under a rug, instead of worrying about how to hide the wires for your project. Websites like Pinterest, Think I Have That, Etsy and Lifehacker make these inventions easy to find.
