The first obstacle I faced when I was getting started with woodworking was which tools were needed. I did not realize that there was such variations in woodworking tools. There really does seem to be a tool for every job and this is something a lot of beginner woodworkers don't think about. Having the proper tools is something that transcends woodworking and can apply to any hobby, job or life situation. Sometimes when you are going through a woodworking plan you do not think about the tools that are needed. That is why it is useful to have a list of "tools for carpentry" right out of the gate.
Every professional woodworker has a plan before getting into a project and thinks about what tools will be needed throughout the entire process. Most professionals do not just build their projects on a whim either. They have a large repertoire of woodworking plans to back them up to make sure that they are able to build any project for the customer. Even as a hobbyist you should have the same thing. A lot of what hobbyists do is build their own furniture and build gifts for family and friends. You do not want to miss your nephews birthday because you got stuck on his project and did not have the right tools to complete it on time.
Having your "tools for carpentry" list before starting any project is absolutely essential. The resource of plans I use when woodworking includes over 16,000 plans and each and every one of them has a proper and full list of tools needed for each project. I never start anything without first gathering all my tools and materials. It is similar to cooking, you don't want to be caught mixing all your ingredients for a cake only to realize that you do not have a cake pan to use with the oven.
I am no cook but I think that would be a horrible and embarrassing situation. Something as simple as not having enough nails for a wood project is unacceptable to me and I am always embarrassed when that happens, although it rarely does. I have mentioned before where I get all of my materials and supplies for cheap. Knowing where to get a consistent supply of materials and tools and knowing what is needed before starting any project is he first thing any aspiring woodworker should learn. There is only one resource I have ever found that has not left me down in this regard.
