Woodwork Paint

Creating wonderful and unique woodwork projects is one thing but knowing how to finish them is a different subject. Using woodwork paint in the correct manner is essential to get a professional finish to your projects. The last thing you want is to slave over a piece down your garden shed only to ruin it with a shabby finish.

In a home, elaborate doors are more often or not given a paint finish. I would always advise removing all handles or elaborate hinges if the door is already standing vertical. A wedge should also be used to secure the door about halfway through it's movement cycle. As a wedge you can use a folded towel to protect the flooring or the carpet.

Always start at the top of things when using woodwork paint. Like most things this applies to doors to. Down-strokes used in a careful manner will eliminate brush strokes that give woodwork a amateur look. Masking tape is a must when it comes to woodwork paint, especially if your project involves glass of any sort.

I recently constructed a window sill and frames with my friend that took a lot of work. The frames ( and sill ) took quite a lot of effort to be fitted but once the window was set up it looked very impressive. Before the woodwork paint we fitted a good deal of making tape to protect the actual glass in the window.

Unfortunately, in our haste to get the project over we left the tape on to long after the paint job. I'm pointing this out because you should not leave the masking tape on for to long with any woodwork project. Removing the tape can cause the dried paint to come off with it ruining the whole look - touching the missing paint up will still leave a mark where the original paint came off.

Over time certain objects woodwork paint will start to dis-color around your home. This is all to common in homes that a smoker resides in. This tobacco staining to the woodwork paint will make the item very hard to re-paint and will cause bubbling. You can use something called 'sugar soap' to paint your stained woodwork and remove the problem.

Sugar soap is really great for correcting woodwork paint but you must be very careful. Always wear gloves to protect your hands and be very careful about your face - sugar soap is an irritant and will hurt your skin. The main thing to remember with all techniques of woodwork paint is to take your time. A rush job painting anything will only end up in a terrible job.
