2012 Best In Show for Pekingese

My husband and I are avid animal lovers and have owned many pets during our long marriage. I can’t remember a time that we didn’t have at least one pet sharing our home. So, when we heard that Malachy the Pekingese won Best of Show at Westminster, we were ecstatic. We’ve owned four of these dogs so watching Malachy trot away with the Best in Show ribbon thrilled us.

Malachy is 4-years-old with Westminster being his 115th, best in show title. David Fitzpatrick, Malachy’s handler and co-owner said “He saved all his energy for the ring today.”

Pekingese or Pekes, as they are lovingly referred to, are a regal dog, dating back to 2000 BC. Worshiped in China for many centuries, it was common for the Emperor to use Pekingese as bodyguards. The Pekes accompanied the Emperor to matters of State, with two announcing his approach with piercing barks and the other two holding the hem of his royal robes in their mouths.

The Pekingese, also known as the “Lion Dog”, came to America in 1898 and the American Kennel Club added them to their registry in 1906. They now rank in the top 25 of the American Kennel Club’s registry listings.

It’s a small wonder these dogs are so popular. Dignified and confident, Pekingese are one of the most independent dogs of the toy breeds. As their history implies, they have a regal bearing and quietly lie around the house, watching their personal kingdom. Strong-willed, with a mind of his own, the Pekingese needs a confident owner, not afraid of taking charge of this little dynamo.

The proud Pekingese is loyal to his owner but doesn’t like rough handling from anyone. Willful yet sensitive, this little guy resents being scolded. Their strong temperament makes them want to be the boss.

Pekingese are a high maintenance breed. They require regular grooming and shed heavily. With their flat face and almost non-existent nose, they are prone to snorting, snuffling, wheezing and loud snoring. Because of his short face, his respirator system is compromised so if you smoke, this dog is not for you. Your Peke will also be more prone to allergens including freshly cut grass.

Short face dogs are at high risk for heatstroke since their panting is not vigorous enough to lower body heat. They also suffer from eye diseases, skin conditions and joint problems. But if you want an intelligent loyal friend, a Pekingese is the only dog to have.
