2013 New Year Resolutions for Dogs

Is your dog getting a bit chunky as the new year approaches? How about making some 2013 New Year resolutions for dogs along with your own?

If both you and your best furry friend are a little overweight or maybe even a lot overweight it would be in both of your best interests to go ahead and get some exercise. It will not hurt to get out there and do something in the year to come. Even if it is only a short walk at first, it will help both of you feel a bit better. The important thing is to get started and then to stick with it.

Even if you are not overweight, but your dog is getting a bit, well, let's admit it...fat, does not mean it will not help you too. By going out for a walk with your dog you will feel a lot better too, knowing you are helping out your best friend to be healthier and happier in the New Year!

Why is exercise so important?

Exercise is important in getting both you and your dog feeling better by improving not only yourselves physically but mentally. Walking improves the circulation throughout the whole body...and by getting out in the fresh air and seeing some different scenery besides the same old living room, kitchen, office, etc. you can feel a lot better emotionally and so can your dog!

Maybe that is why your dog is acting like a lunatic sometimes! Too much unused energy and nothing to do to burn it off! Not to mention that a dog does get bored just like a person would after awhile of the same old thing every day.

That could be why your dog thought your shoes looked like something just so tasty to snack on! That's one way for your dog to get your attention and add a bit of excitement to its life...although it probably did not realize it would not make you the happiest person to be around.

Just think, your dog sees the same thing all day and night every day. Do you think you would get a little bored after awhile too and start acting out after awhile? Well, hopefully you will not get to the point of chewing on someone's shoes just to have some excitement!

Starting a daily walking schedule

Since I am not a health professional or physician, or veterinarian by any means, please check with your doctor before starting any type of new physical exercise...and the same for your dog too! Check with your veterinarian and follow their advice. I am just sharing with you what I have done in the past that helped me and my dogs in the hopes that it will help you too.

If you do not already take your dog for a daily walk just start out slowly. Even a short walk lasting only 20 minutes will greatly improve the health of both you and your best friend. As you get used to going for a walk for 20 minutes every day, you will probably notice it gets easier after awhile.

Once this happens, maybe you should think about increasing the time even by five minutes more or whatever you feel you can fit into your daily schedule. Try going on different routes on your walks helps too. This way it is not always the same scenery, which can sometimes get kind of old after awhile.

Goals you can set

  • Go for a 20-minute walk daily with your dog
  • Increase it to 25 or even 30 minutes once you feel you are not benefiting as much from only 20 minutes.
  • Try different routes
  • Write down your accomplishments once a week..and your dog's too! For example, if you notice you or your dog have lost a pound, look a bit trimmer, or just have more energy even...write that down! It helps to have something written down to see all you have accomplished and know that it is helping.
  • As you progress, find new routes or add some extra time to your walks to help keep both of you fit and to keep from getting stuck in a rut!

Hope you and your dog have a healthier and happier New Year in 2013!

I do have to say my lab does suffer a bit on exercise during the winter. I just do not like walking in the cold.

Lol...Yes mine too. Some days it is just too cold, not to mention icy! I can just imagine slipping and falling...ouch! My dogs would probably think I'm playing around on the ground and then it would be really fun trying to get back up when it is all ice with them jumping around!

Good advice Sherry. My dog used to take care of my exercise. He brought his leash to me every day at 4:00 PM. He didn't back down. I had to stop what I was doing, and go out for a walk with him. Funny, but true.

Not only will the dog benefit, just think how all that walking is going to help the owners. :)

Yes, it certainly does. A few years ago, I was actually going for two walks a day...since at the time we had five dogs, and it does help a lot. I felt a lot better and I think the dogs did too. I really need to get motivated and get back into going for a walk not only every day but try to increase it a bit.
