A Pug\'s Life

A pug here in the U.S. is a toy dog with a fine, glossy coat, square body, wrinkly face, and curled tail. Oh, and let's not forget its short muzzle face and eyes that are round and full of so much life. The ears are widely set apart on his head and are either rose or button ears. Rose ears are smaller and gives the head a rounder appearance while the button ears fold over, both types are black in color. Pugs come in two colors, black or fawn and have a short, curled tail. These are the major characteristics of this adorable breed.

A pug's life expectancy is between 12 and 14 years, however, some have lived longer than this. Of course, there are certain things one can do to extend their life, as with any pet. For one, over feeding is a big mistake. If you left a bag of food out, your pug will most likely keep eating and not know when to stop. This kind of thing will have many negative effects like leg and joint problems. It's very good to keep your pug active by taking him for at least two walks per day and make sure he has his regular checkups and vaccinations.

Although caring for a dog is not as easy as most people seem to think, it's a lot of work. Pugs are different from other breeds in that they are full of life, smart, good with kids, and will definitely make you laugh. The reference to pugs is "much in little" describing their small size and large personality. If you're looking for a dog to exercise with, don't choose a pug. He'll be a great companion for you but is not an "outside" dog. They are very sensitive to the heat and should not be outside for long periods of time in it.

Pugs are actually really good dogs for apartment living. However, they are not easy to train. It will just take them a little longer than other dogs, but one thing is for sure, your pug wants to please you. They also shed during the seasons in large amounts even though they have short hair. The normal length of hair is 3/4 inch or longer with the top coat with long straight hairs and the bottom coat with softer straight hairs. So, yes, pugs do shed a lot.

Pugs have lots of wrinkles on their face because the Chinese Emperors referred to the wrinkles as lucky symbols long ago. It's important to gently clean the wrinkles with a tissue at least once per week. If not, then moisture and bacteria can get trapped and infected. You should also brush his coat weekly while checking for eye problems. On a monthly basis, you should trim his toe nails and bathe him if needed. Many find male pugs to be more laid back and loving while the female ones are more alert and independent.

Have you ever heard of the saying, "Pugs Not Drugs?" Well, I was researching pugs one day on the internet and I came across this great saying. What better way to put it in words than just that? Pugs are just so cute and lovable, having one will definitely keep you busy and in good spirits. Yes, having one and taking care of one is a lot of work, but it's all worth it. As mentioned above, "much in little" is what describes the pug's personality and this is very true. There is a lot about pugs to learn before investing in one for life.
