If you are going to adopt a dog you have to realize it is a big decision. It is a huge responsibility for an individual or family. There are a lot to consider, but it can all be very rewording. Dogs can be great companions. They all have great personalities. No matter what the situation and where you are they will always be happy to see you and follow your every command! I have two dogs of my own and I know that if I leave the house for 5 minutes and come back, it is like I have been gone forever and they are sooo excited to see me. Your dog will be like that too! They are great species no matter what breed you decide to get! Here are some things to think about.

Why Adopt?

The best companion you can have is a dog! They will love you unconditionally no matter what! If you make the decision to get a dog then you have to decide if you want to buy from a breeder or adopt a dog. There is a lot of issues with puppy mills and over breeding. Your best bet is to adopt a dog. There are soo many dogs out there that do not have a home. Every time you buy from a breeder, whether it be a legit breeder or a puppy mill, you are creating more need for homes. There are already so many dogs that need homes out there, we do not need to add to that number. There are may shelters around the area that you can adopt a dog from. They will take the time to work with you and get you the best match. Stay away from adopting a pet from outside your state. That increases the chances that it is a puppy mill. Try to meet with the people and the dog before adopting.

What kind of dog to adopt?

There are many breeds of dogs that you can choose from. From big to small, great with kids to temperamental. You have to take into consideration the situation that you are in. If you are single or have no kids then you have a bigger variety of breeds to choose from. You don't have to worry about the dogs that are not good with kids. If you do have kids or a large family you need to talk to the shelter managers about this. Some dogs are not good with kids and will need to be placed in a home without them. Some dogs are great with kids! I would say the majority of dogs good with kids would be bigger dogs such as Labs and Goldens. You also have to consider allergies of everyone that will be around the dog. If you or someone in your family are highly allergic to dogs and you would like to get one, I would tell you to look for dogs with hair instead of fur. They are known as hypoallergenic such as the Bichon and Maltese breeds.

What your dog will need initially?

When you do find the perfect dog you will need to have some initial supplies. You will need a crate. If the dog is older and already trained you should get a good size crate for the dog to be in comfortably with a little extra room. If the dog is not trained then you should get a tight crate for the dog so they do not have an accident in there crate so you can continue training. You will need dog bowls, water and food bowls, relative to the dogs size. You will also need some dog food. I recommend all natural food. The best way to tell that it is all natural is to look at the ingredients on the bag and make sure there is no or almost no ingredients that say "Meal" on them, such as "Lamb-Meal or Fish-Meal." You should also be looking for food that has a small list of ingredients or if long, it should be ingredients you can read and understand. Last, you should have a few toys for the dog. Make sure you have at least one good chew toy as well as a soft toy. Dogs love to chew so make sure you have a toy they can do that too. Everything you will need for your dog when they enter your home is available on this dog lovers site!

Training your dog?

You will probably need to train your dog to have no accidents in the house as well as do tricks! This is very important to do in the beginning. You need to get your dog to respect you and listen to you in all ways. Training the dog to go outside is the first step. There is many training materials on this that include positive reinforcement. I would look to lean towards that type of training. Also, some simple training tools are great for getting your dog to listen to you on command. These include sit, stay, lay down, paw, etc.

Overall, adopting a dog is the best way to add a canine to your family! They are great to have around and to love! You will need to decide where to get your dog, what type of dog to get, get the supplies and train your dog once you get him or her. If you read over this article you will have a great idea of what you need to decide and do before you get your dog as well as training to do when the dog enters your home. Don't get overwhelmed with all the decision. You can simply go to dogseveryneed and get everything you could possibly need!
