An Ode To My Master - I Am Your Pet Dog
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

This is a little something I thought about writing after witnessing the neglect and mistreatment of a neighbor to his pet dog. If an abused or neglected dog could speak, it would tell you about its miserable life. What would your pet dog say if you don't love it?

If I were my neighbor's dog, this is the ode I would write to my master.

I am just a tiny dog, Which you bought to entertain, Your family members and friends, But in the porch I remain.

I am kept night and day, While the house is empty, Outside in the rain and sun, You leave me loud and whiny.

Have you thought about what, I need besides food and water, Aside from a home, I also need your love and laughter.

I am your pet dog, Not your table or a stool, Why do you neglect me, I am not a lifeless tool.

I bark and I whine, But no one comes to see, Or care about when I need, To go poo or pee.

I am alone the whole day, Chained to a bench outside, I'd rather be a stray, Than to live with my blight.

You seldom give a thought to me, In the evenings when you are home, I wish you'd play ball with me, Or throw me a rubber bone.

My master won't you hear me, When I whine for you, The neighbors are complaining, When I keep calling for you.

I am not a complainer, Nor am I noisy for fun, I just feel very sorry, I'm treated worse than your plant.

The animal shelter came, To see me the other day, But you were not in, So I could not go away.

I wish you were not my master, Because you neglect poor me, I'd rather be left in a shelter, Where they'd listen when I plea.

To my doggy friends out there, You are not alone, When you bark and whine, I know...

You haven't got a happy home.

I really pity my neighbor's dog and it does not only make noise the whole day because it's alone, it is also chained (with a short metal chain) to a bench in the porch 24 hours a day. I have informed the animal shelter to come and see it but they could not do anything about it as the owner is always not at home and they cannot take the dog because of the locked gate. The city municipal has also been informed about it but all they did was give a warning through letter.

I have not tried telling the neighbor myself as he is a very fierce and unapproachable person (I hear him shouting every day to his family and dog). I have done whatever I could to inform the authorities but no action was taken. Until today, the dog is still chained to a bench in the porch with little chance of running outside. If you know someone's dog which is noisy, it could be that it's being neglected. Do something about it for the dog's sake and yours because it can be disruptive to have a dog which is always barking and whining because of abuse and neglect.

Have you got any ideas to solve this case of neglect by my neighbor? I will appreciate any tips and comments. Thank you and help me save this dog!

I quite agree with Heather. You have gotten things started with the authorities. Perhaps you can identify a time when they can visit to find the owner home. I absolutely hate to see this type of thing. Most of the folks I deal with are at least attentive to their pets as they are in our training classes. Some of these dogs have come from situations like the one you describe and have a plethora of problems.

Thanks for your comment Mr Hughes. That's a good idea, telling the authorities what time to come. I hope they still do their rounds at night because my neighbor and his family come home around 7 or 8 pm. I would talk to the neighbor myself if he weren't such a nasty person who kept shouting at his family and pet. It's pretty insensitive when all the neighbors can hear. What do you suggest I do if the problem persists and the authorities can't step in?

Ai Hoon, this article is so well written because you have tapped into an emotional response from your reader. It's a horrible situation and I, like you, would find it very distressing. I have no suggestions other than to continue contacting the animal shelter. Perhaps it would need actioning more urgently if the complaint is in writing? The tragedy is that these people may lose their dog and simply replace it with another. I also worry that kids and dogs in a home get treated somewhat similarly.... best of luck with it. You have a kind heart.

Thanks Heather. It really distresses me to see any animal being mistreated because I do love animals and wouldn't dream of getting a pet if I knew I wouldn't be able to care for it as it should be cared for. Or, if I wanted a pet but couldn't give it attention, I would choose a low maintenance pet instead of a dog. And you know what the worst thing is, my neighbor chose a dog breed that is a natural whiner and the type that cannot be left alone for long. It's small like a chihuahua but I think it's a mixed breed. I will write a letter and also send some pictures of the dog to the animal shelter again and see what they say. Thanks for your comment Heather. If you come up with a solution or know anyone who does, please let me know.
