Animal Rescue And Shelters

I want to talk about how terrible it is that there are so few "no kill" shelters. Most shelters and city pounds kill animals every day without any reason other than the animals are taking up too much space. I am appalled, as a human being, at the disreguard for life that our race has shown to our companions.

Most shelters have a "time stamp" for every animal that enters their care, and if an animal doesn't get placed in a home before that time expires, the animal is killed to make room for others. There is no reason for this... if the animal companion population is really so high that we have to kill the ones we have to make room for others, then maybe we need to push the spay and nueter laws harder in this country. People take their animals to these places for a variety of reasons. One thing that is always true, however, is that the owner doesn't want the animal to get hurt and wants it for find a new loving home, NOT to die.

No kill shelters, while on the rise in the U.S are still hard to find, and if the animal isn't in good spirits and decently trained may be turned away. Not to mention that they are not found in every major city. I live in Greenfield, Indiana, and there is a humane society and an animal control in my town, but the nearest no kill shelter is on the otherside of Indianapolis from me! Granted that I would not olan on getting rid of a family pet unless it was absolutely necessary, but still this just steams me, that in my area, I have to drive 2 hours if I don't want to see my pet end up in a place where it may very well end up dead.

I worked for a no kill shelter, called Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter, in Grandview, MO, a few years back, and I want to say that it was the most amazing sight I have ever been a part of. This shelter actually takes the time to rehabilitate the animals that come into their care. They have trainers, animal councilors, socialization for animals if they can, and rigorous adoption policies to protect the animals, and insure they are going to good homes.

I think the U.S needs to really look at the value of life, and realize it doesn't just apply to humans. We should open more places like Wayside Waifs Animal Shelter, and make spay and nueter laws more enforcable. This will empty out the shelters and will give more animals a chance at a better quality of life and it would more more humanity into the human race. Hazrat Inayat Khan once said "everything in life is speaking, in spite of its appearent silence." The animals we put down so thoughtlessly have souls, and thoughts, and feelings. They are living things and should have rights and be repected as such.
