Do you think that anxiety and dogs would be a difficult combination to deal with? Well, you are not alone because many pet owners find their dogs anxiety symptoms hard to cope with. Sometimes a pet's anxiety can get to the point of down right unbearable and unfortunately, the owner is not even aware that their pet is suffering from very real stress. It can get so bad that the once beloved pet is given away or surrendered to a shelter simply because the pet's behavior becomes intolerable. This is a case where the dogs behavior causes the owner to think they simply have a bad dog.
So what are some anxiety symptoms that your pet could display?
- Uncontrolled barking
- Destructive behavior-This could range from a shoe to a whole room.
- Whining, low growling
- Pacing
- Eliminating inside-Excited behavior upon your return home-jumping on you, whining etc.
Of course, this does not include every anxiety symptoms that you may see in your pet but if your pet exhibits any of these signs on a regular basis it could mean they are suffering from an anxiety disorder. It is important to pay attention to signs of stress in your pet as soon as you notice there is a problem.
I do understand how easy it is to miss early signs but it is however true some pet owners like to believe the story they tell their selves about their pets. You know the stories, the ones that make our pets sound more like our human friends. "He urinated on the floor because he is upset with me." or "No, really he chewed up my shoe because I was late with his supper." This scenario always brings to mind a good friend of mine and his rather large Labrador Retriever. It was obvious to me early on, back when Jake, the lab was a puppy, that he had some pretty significant anxiety disorders. My friend wouldn't hear of it though and rarely complained to me. Occasionally he would grumble about a favorite pair of shoes but nothing major until the day he left Jake in his pick up truck for an extended period. My friend came back to total destruction of the cab of the truck and there sat Jake on the bare spring seat with a piece of white seat cushion hanging from his mouth. Needless to say my friend was ready to address Jake's anxiety symptoms.
As you can see anxiety and dogs can turn in to an unpleasant experience. The good news is there is information and help for your pets anxiety symptoms.
