Are You Putting Your Dog at Risk to Be Stolen?

Many dogs are stolen each year because their owner has made a simple mistake. When approached by a friendly stranger, they brag about their dog’s purebred heritage. As the stranger and owner converse, the dog is learning to trust this friendly person who is petting him. The owner readily tells the dog's name when asked. The stranger may also ask if the owner has ever considered breeding their dog, indicating that they might be interested in purchasing a puppy. The owner may give some general information thinking that they have a prospective buyer for a future litter of puppies. However, this friendly stranger may actually be a dog thief who will steal their pet and sell it to a puppy mill for breeding.

Puppy mills breed dogs to sell online and through pet stores. While the operation is legal in most states, puppy mills facts demonstrate that their practices are far from humane. They breed females every time they come into heat, which is usually twice a year. This puts an enormous strain on the dog’s health. When a female is no longer able to get pregnant, she is usually killed.

Male dogs suffer in puppy mills also. They are often confined in small cages that are rarely cleaned. Because the mills keep a lot of dogs in a small area, diseases spread rapidly. Most of the infected dogs go without any veterinary treatment so the mill can make as much profit as possible.

The best way to protect your dog from a potential thief is to hint that he or she is a mixed breed. Since all of the AKC breeds are comprised of various mixed breeds, this is technically true. Puppy mills are only interested in purebreds, so the thief will not be able to sell mixed breed dogs.

Another way to deter a potential thief is to let it be known that your dog has been sexually altered. If they ask about a potential breeding, tell them that the dog has been spayed or neutered. If it is visibly obvious that your male is intact, you can make up a story about a mysterious illness he had as a puppy that rendered him sterile. Knowing that your pet cannot reproduce discourages the thief from stealing him or her.

You can also train your dog to get a permission command before greeting a stranger. This allows you to choose whether you want your dog to trust someone. You can use words like, “Ok” or “Go ahead,” to indicate to your dog that this person is safe. If the stranger seems to be asking too many questions, you can break off the conversation and move your dog away from the area.

Following these tips can save your dog’s life. Be cautious around strangers and never brag about your dog.
