Bar Wasn\'t Just A Dog; Bar Was Human ( Take 1)

I remember when I saw my first Rottweiler. The year was 1987 I was coming home from my security job and rather tired. As I crossed our street on Prospect Place my new neighbor, who wore dreadlocks, was washing his blue Saab in front of his apartment on this nice sunny day.

I asked "what up?" Dread replied, "what's good?"

"Not much" I replied then I continue to walk around his car. When I got to the other side of the Saab there he was standing in full attention. I never seen anything as beautiful before in my life. I looked with amazment captivated by his appearance.

Now standing just from finishing washing his tires. Dread warned me, "He won't bite you."

Without responding I continued to stare falling in love at first sight; with a dog. I told myself I must have one of those dogs.

His name was Max full-blooded German Rottweiler weighting about 110 pounds. He carried a big round head and a chest like he could had been a weight lifter. His coat was shiny and black with mahogany points. Max had deep drown eyes that spoke of courage and boldness. His perfect stance was fearless. Everything about Max said exactly what Dread said except one thing, Max's stance said, "I won't just bite you, I'll tear you to pieces."

I was still staring at Max when I asked Dread, "What kind of dog is that?"

"Oh my young black brother that's a German Rottweiler."

"A German What?" I asked confused.

"Rottweiler." Dread replied while cleaning his windows now.

Although Dread said he wouldn't bite me, I walked hesitantly around Max, keeping a good distance as Max's watchful eyes remind me to stay that way.

As the summer went on it wasn't unusual for me to stay over my baby mother's house then back at my mother's house. That's what young men do when they're still trying to find themselves.

Mom lives in a four family unit on the second floor. I liked it because it was on a quite street. Max also stayed on the second floor in the apartment to our left. Our building were so close I could stretch my arm out from our balcony and touch the banister on his balcony, it was the only thing I didn't like about our apartment.

It was during those back and forth times my mother and Max build an understanding of each other, a rather strange relationship. Max learned what time my mother got up for work, and if her alarm clock didn't alarm, he'll softly bark until she acknowledge him.

I was taken aback by this and ask her one Saturday morning while we were having breakfast. "Mom the other day did I hear you tell Max you was up?"

"Yeah." She said while spreading butter on her toast. "Max will start tripping if I don't tell him I'm up for work. That silly dog will bark until I say something. Crazy dog." Mom shaking her head while smiling.

My curiosity grew about this breed of dog. I though to myself, first Max stood on guard protecting his master ready to jump on anyone who got to close. Then he didn't growl or bark when I stared him in his face. Finally he have a personality that make sure his neighbor get to work on time?

No Mom I don't think Max is crazy at all I think he's unique. Bewildered, I will need more information on this kind dog so I headed to our local library to start my research.
