The nutritional benefits of barf raw dog food are many. Your dogs entire system is geared toward eating raw meat and bones, plus a few veggies. It is very difficult to get your dog the right amount of vitamins and minerals that he need by feeding dry kibble that has had all of the nutirents cooked out of it.
Before you run out and start feeding your hound an entire side of beef however, there are a few things you should know about the right way to go about the barf raw dog food diet.
The main ingredient of the barf raw dog food diet is raw meaty bones and muscle meat from either beef, pork, veal, chicken, turkey or fish. (Not so much on the fish bones however) This will account for approximately 60 to 75% of the diet.
Keep in mind it is very important to include the bones! Bone marrow is an important source of nutrients and chewing on them will keep the dogs teeth strong, clean and healthy.
Don't forget the fruits and vegetables in the barf raw dog food diet. I know, it's hard to imagine your dog sitting around peeling an orange for himself, but Wolves and dogs do eat fruits and veggies in the wild and they do provide a much needed source of vitamins and minerals that are important for your dogs health.
Also remember to include green leafy veggies as well. Although in some cases these can give your dog gas. This is not necessarily the worst thing for the dog but can make living with him a bit a chore.
Fruit should be a regular although smaller portion of barf raw dog food. apples, bananas, pears, watermelon, and oranges are all good choices.
The smallest but still very important portion of your dogs barf raw dog food diet should be Offal. Offal is basically comprised of internal organs. Heart, liver, kidney etc. This is possibly the hardest portion to handle on your own. A good rule of thumb is to just find a good butcher and have him grind these items into a sort of hamburger consistency and take it home and freeze it until use. By the way it's a good idea to thaw it out prior to giving it to the dog. Dogs are not equipped to knaw on frozen food items. Their teeth and mouth are not cut out to chomp on a solid block of forzen meat.
Good luck with the switch over to barf raw dog food and good raw eating!
