Benefits Of Pet Insurance for My Family

Hello fellow doggy owners, and to all the other owners of different pets! One of the reasons you have come across this article is, you are either in the process of considering Pet Insurance or are just curious about it, and you want to know the benefits of having it.

Is Pet insurance worth it? I cannot tell you yes or no. What I can do is share what I’ve experienced not having pet insurance when my family really needed it.

To start off, as a pet lover myself, I was inspired to do something for my family, as I have experienced many happiness and joy from our family dogs, whenever I was going through depression, sadness, frustration, and more. One lick from their disgusting tongue, a couple of waggles of their tail, and playful nature have drastically helped me in times of struggle. None of my struggles and obstacles were gone, but at that moment, I felt some comfort.

If you look back a couple of decades ago, most considered dogs as just a pet. Leaving them outside in any season, with a dog house somewhere in the back yard. But these days, many people consider them as being part of the family, living inside air conditioned homes, being pampered, spoiled, and loved to the max.

Well, the latter is our case, as our dogs are a part of my family, and each time one passes away, my dad especially becomes heart broken. I have never seen my father cry, but when three of our dogs passed away simultaneously throughout the years, one recently, seeing my father shed tears is a totally new experience each time.

Our family currently has three doggies, one mother, one father, and one son. The thing is, we had four, and the mother doggy had a litter of 2. Our youngest doggy have passed away last year December due to poor heart health. They both were born in our house, and have gotten the basic treatments at the local veterinarian.

However, one thing that I was angry about was, if only we had let the vets have a more thorough check up on the new born with more advanced treatments, we could have extended the life of the youngest one at least a couple of more years or more. But, my parents found out the hard way that he had poor heart health and it was too late to do anything, other than to ease his suffering.

My parents do not have pet insurance coverage, and if we did, we could have had an option to do surgery with a high success rate of a healthier heart, but my Father thought it was not necessary to have pet insurance, and just have a savings account for basic vet checkups and fees. Guess what, it was too expensive to do any type of surgical procedures, and that was his only option. With all the other financial burdens, how much can one average person or family really save in their savings or pet savings accounts for their pets in time of need?

So from that experience, I wanted to look for a solution to extend our current doggies lives, by researching different types of pet insurance, which could help for future situations that require large amounts of money for advanced treatment options and or surgical procedures if an accident or unforeseen health issue occurs.

I’ve come across the top 5 pet insurance benefits that will definitely help in providing the service needed to extend the lives of our dogs, even if it is only for a few more days.

  • Having Pet insurance provides a sense of peace, because, if any one of our doggy family members suffer major illnesses or accidents, we would be able to afford the most advanced and expensive treatment options, and get reimbursed for most of it back. Knowing that we have tried our best by providing the best care, even though they still pass away at the surgical table, I will not have any regrets. I have done what I could to extend their lives, but in the end God gives and takes away. If he gives back our doggy family members for even just a few more days, I would be thankful, and provide them the best last days of their lives, with their favorite scenery, favorite foods, and more.
  • Pet insurance will protect your pockets from the high rising costs of unexpected veterinarian procedures and checkups, which requires advanced technology and treatment options during a time of emergency.
  • Unlike Human Health Insurance, Pet Insurance allows you to choose any veterinarian, which provides you security knowing you will get the best treatment wherever you take your pet for treatment, and get reimbursed wherever you are in the coverage zone which is most of the United States veterinarian clinics and hospitals. Unless you live in Canada and other countries, where other Pet Insurance companies are thriving, which will be in my upcoming articles.
  • Pet insurance offers options to fit your budget through various payment methods of monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually. And if you had multiple furry family members, most insurers provide discounts when you include them in the plan, turning it into a family share plan, which is important to our family especially, with our current 3.
  • As mentioned before, how much can one average person and or household, save money and put it into their pet savings account, and expect to pay a bill that is more than what they have already saved in a few short months, when you have other financial burdens? If you have more than enough, than I congratulate you, you are probably in the 1 percent of pet owners with a great pet savings account, but for most average pet owners, it is another burden to consider that requires great deal of discipline to not dip into it. Pet Insurance takes that burden away, through affordable means of payment mentioned in number 4 with the coverage that fits your budget in case of an accident or serious illness to your furry family member.

What Pet Insurance Doesn’t Cover

  • Pre-existing conditons- Health conditions that occurred before the pet insurance policy start date, like congenital and hereditary conditions, which will be explained more in my upcoming articles in detail.
  • Routine Care & Wellness- Basically any “Controlled” situations, like daily checkups which is considered preventive care that is in your control. However, many policies allows you to add these coverage on top of your insurance if you want the whole package. (I do not recommend the routine care & wellness addition to your policy as it might increase your premiums in the long term, and the effectiveness of your policy in times of an emergency might not be 100%.) Paying for these out of pocket will be affordable and recommended.
  • Office Visits & Exam Fees- Most Veterinarians charge a fee that is consistent in terms of just a consultation and or exam. It will be an addition to other stuff recommended by the veterinarian if need be, but if you have a policy with a payout annual limit of say $5000 or more, it will be covered. If you have a policy with no payout limits, it will not be covered.

In this modern time and decade, where pets are now considered a part of the family for many owners and families, considering pet insurance can help extend your furry family members lives when they are suffering from a serious illness or accident.

If pet insurance is not for you, then I wish you many blessings and happiness with your furry friend, and I pray that you have another means to provide the best for them in uncontrollable circumstances, but if pet insurance is for you, the benefits I have listed will definitely give you a peace of mind in times of emergency.

For those interested in Pet Insurance, I have done the grueling research of providing the top 5 pet insurance companies in the United States with the highest ratings from the top pet insurance review sites online credited by the BBB (Better Business Bureau), and have narrowed it down to an unbiased review, from one pet owner to the other. You can find it in my upcoming article, so check for an update at my website (Link Coming Soon)

Pet Insurance is good when you first get your puppy. After talking to a vet about insurance he recommended general insurance for first couple of years and then upgrade after that. That is what we did with our doberman. When he was three we found a tiny lump on his neck. Turned out he had cancer. Insurance we had covered 85% of the treatment. They told us the treatment would probably give him a couple of more years. He ended up beating the odds and died at 11 years of age. So treatment gave him 8 more years of quality life. Would I recommend insurance - you bet!

Yes, you are correct! Pet insurance will be the most effective for newborns and new pet owners, as they also have the benefit of getting lifetime discounts if they stick with it. But, I am also glad that many pet owners still have the opportunity to find affordable plans that fit the age and health needs of their dogs over the age of 1, as in a decade ago, age discrimination in insurance was harsh when it comes to costs. I am also glad to hear that you were able to provide the best care for your doberman in time of need! Sorry to hear that he passed away, however, 11 dog years is equivalent to 82 years in human years for doberman's especially! I am sure he lived a very healthy and fruitful life thanks to the treatment you have been able to provide with your insurance!
