Best Exercise for Your Dog

Since I've been writing about my babies, I'm finding there is more to having a good, happy, and healthy dog then just the basics. I have researched clean food, a clean yard so they are safe, a clean house, cleaned with puppy friendly cleaning products. But there's also another aspect to this. It's exercise.

This really came home to me during our resent visit from Issac. Here lately we've been going for walks, twice a day. When Issac hit and it started raining, we either could not take them out or they would not go out (because they are so sweet they would melt). They would go on the porch turn around and come back into the house. You could all most see them shacking their heads and saying "I am NOT going out in THAT!" Every time I'd get up they'd follow me. as if to say is it time to go out?When it would stop raining I'd have to carry them outside, they don't like getting their feet wet (but they are not spoiled, really!) So after they'd peep I'd bring them back inside. I'm a Good Mommy!

They really like to go for walks though. All we have to do is get their leash and collar, and they are jumping around, barking, and ready to go.

Exercise is very important to your pet;

  1. It is a very good outlet for any pinned up energy.
  2. Also it's good for their hearts, lungs, muscle tone, circulatory system, bones, and joints.
  3. It cuts down on accidents in the house. Before I started walking Buddy and Trixie, I would let them out and then they'd come back in the house and potty. But now they go for their walk and there's plenty of time to find new places to mark.
  4. Exercising your dog will cut down on any mischief they may get into, like chewing up your favorite pair of shoes, getting into the garbage, or barking. My Trixie girl liked paper books and magazines.

Different breeds need different exercises. For example, puppy's and working breeds need more exercise, retrievers need to play more fetch games, sledding dogs need to pull a wagon or run or jog, and terriers like to sniff and catch prey. Since Issac, my Trixie is after ever baby land crab in site. She loves chasing them , even went under the car after one. Don't know what she does with them but she sure seems to have a good time.

I know they seem happier. They sleep really well. Also it's good for me too.

Lastly, be careful of the heat, no hotter then 85 degrees. Realized the issues some of our pets might have: black haired, puppies, old dogs, long haired, short muzzled, or just not in very good shape. If it is too hot for you then it is too hot for them. Also, please do not leave them in the car with the windows rolled up. Here in the lower keys the temperature in a car can get well over 100 in a matter of minutes. We try to walk them in the morning about 9ish, then again in the evening around 7ish. Enjoy your Babies, Yes! That is what they are, your babies (and they don't even talk back ... well not too much). All they want is to love you!!

I didn't have a dog growing up. My sister had asthma so we didn't want to risk her health Gayle

I grew up with dogs. Hunting dogs, pet dogs and a few guard dogs. I never thought much about special needs for them. Don't get me wrong our dogs were well taken care of just not pampered. This type of article makes me realize there are folks with a different mindset. Their dogs are more part of the family and that is great. Thanks for sharing

Love my babies too Harriet! They are so spoiled. If Annie, my three year old Dachshund gets her feet wet I have to pick her up and wipe them off. She doesn't like the feel of the outside door mat on her tootsies either. I have to lift her over it and back into the house. I can tell you love to spoil your pets too!

Our girl Sally loves to sniff around outside looking for and waiting to see a mouse or two. She'll do it for hours and sometimes won't come inside, instead preferring to sit on the comfy chair, alert, waiting to hear a sound or see a movement so she can go and do some more sniffing and maybe barking too, which gets a bit annoying. You're right Harriet, they are our babies, so much a part of each day and they make us smile. Thanks for your article:)
