Bichon Frise Riding In the Car? - Keep Them Safe

Is traveling by car with your Bichon Frise a good idea?

If you own a Bichon Frise, you already know how much the breed likes to be around people all of the time. A Bichon is not content to stay at home, and sometimes, even bad anxiety related behavior can flare up if you leave your dog too often by himself.

Many Bichon owners find a simple and practical solution is to take their pup with them when they head out to run errands or travel. Most Bichons love riding in the car. They are thrilled to be included, and excited to be out and about. As long as your destination is one which welcomes dogs, I would encourage you to take your pet along with you for the ride. He'll enjoy the outing, and the potential of other people around to lavish him with the attention he loves to receive.

How do I keep my dog safe in the car?

When you include your Bichon in your travels by car, you need to consider safety in the same way you would for any other passenger. The possibility of a car accident is not pleasant to think about, but it's a very real risk that we all face whenever we drive our vehicles.

You must be sure you are taking your Bichon along for the ride in a safe manner, so they are less likely to be injured in the event of an accident. Your Bichon Frise may want to sit in your lap or lie on the seat beside you. Even if your dog is well behaved, the lack of a restraint system could result in catastrophic injury to your beloved Bichon. Even having to brake sharply could cause the dog to be thrown about the interior of the car and very possibly injured.

Use a Restraint of Some Sort

There are several options you can utilize to ensure your Bichon Frise is safely restrained in the event of an accident or sudden stop. The least expensive and simplest option is to purchase and use a tether. The way it works is one end of the strap clicks into your seat belt slot, and the other end has a clip to attach to the ring on your dogs harness. Quick, simple, and easy to move from vehicle to vehicle.

Another popular option is a harness safety system designed specifically for keeping your dog restrained while in the car with you. Essentially the system includes a comfortable vest or harness, often padded, that you put on your dog, and then there is a strap that attaches to the shoulder belt of a standard car seatbelt.

For a small Bichon Frise or other small breed dog, many owners like to use a pet booster seat. The booster seat is elevated and attaches to the seat of the car with straps. The dog rides inside the basket like booster seat, and there is a strap with a hook to latch the ring of the dogs harness to. This option is the most expensive one, but offers the benefit of giving your Bichon Frise a boost so he can easily look out the window as you travel. Plus it just looks so darn cute!

It may be the law in your state!

If you live in New Jersey, you can be fined up to one thousand dollars for having an unrestrained pet in your vehicle.

Hawaii, Arizona, Connecticut and Maine have taken action as well. There is legislation pending in several other states, and it is expected more states will soon follow suit.

Restrain your Bichon Frise when they travel with you. It's the safest way to travel for both of you.
