Bichon Frise Tear Stains - All You Need to Know

What are these reddish stains?

Does your Bichon Frise have brown or reddish stains discoloring the fur surrounding his eyes? If so, you've come to the right place. You are not alone, this is a very common issue that frequently affects the Bichon Frise breed. It is usually not a reflection of a health problem or other serious issue. It is a cosmetic issue, and many Bichon owners do not like the appearance of their dog with the staining present. There are steps you can take to prevent and improve the stains.

Check with your Vet

The first thing you should do if your dog is suddenly starting to develop eye staining is make an appointment with your veterinarian. The doctor will want to examine your animal, and ensure there is no physical illness or problem that is causing the staining. Once you've ensured the staining is only cosmetic, you can determine what to do next.

Think about diet

Try and recall if anything has changed recently in your Bichon's diet or environment. A popular theory among Bichon Frise enthusiasts is that dyes added to some pet foods during the production process, can excrete through the animal's tear ducts, and cause staining. An allergy or sensitivity to a food being included in the dogs diet can also result in the reddish brown discoloration. Sometimes switching to a new brand of food is all it takes to reduce or eliminate the problem. Consider offering a food with a different main protein source. If the first ingredient on the label of your current brand is chicken for instance, try a formula where lamb or salmon is the first source of protein listed.

Consider a specialty product

If evaluating your Bichon's diet, and substituting a different brand of food doesn't reduce the staining, you may want to consider purchasing one of the products designed and marketed to pet owners specifically to reduce the occurrence of eye stains. The most well known and widely available brand is called Angel Eyes. You can do a search for Angel Eyes on Amazon, they carry several sizes and flavors. There are also almost two thousand customer reviews you can read. Reading about the experiences other Bichon Frise owners have had with the product can help you decide if Angel Eyes is right for your pet.

Grooming is essential

The final area where a little effort can make a big difference when it comes to eye stains is grooming. You should already be taking your Bichon Frise for professional grooming every four to six weeks. Your groomer has the products and skills necessary to properly clean the fur surrounding the eye. A steady routine of professional grooming is a guaranteed path to a cleaner, white eye area. You can also gently wipe your Bichon's eye area with a warm damp washcloth regularly. An eyebrow brush from the makeup department of any drugstore is a perfect tool for breaking up clumped and matted fur near the eyes. In order to avoid any chance of discomfort or injury to your pet, always be cautious and proceed slowly and carefully when working in the vicinity of your dogs eyes.

If you try all of these techniques, and your Bichon Frise still has some eye stains, try not to let it bother you too much. They may just be a result of the way your dogs eye ducts function. Keep a healthy perspective, and focus on the fact that you have a healthy, happy Bichon Frise who gives you unconditional love and brings you joy every day.
