Bonding With Your Dog
Join 1000's of Authors at StreetArticles Today!

One of the most crucial steps in training your dog is working to gain his trust in you. The relationship between you and your dog is a strong bond to be created. When you first bring your dog home you should work to establish a loving caring relationship between you and your dog. This will help you to understand his needs and help him to have complete trust in you.

Dog's should be made to feel secure in their relationship with you and feel like they are part of the family. When the dog feels the mutual love and respect that you have formed they will respond better to your instructions and commands.

It takes time to build the necessary trust between the two of you. Trust comes from setting the boundaries and handling any deviance by being firm but also fair.

It is almost impossible to form respect from your dog without enforceable limitations and without that respect it is harder if not impossible to build a bond.

To help build a relationship with your dog there are 4 tried and tested rules.

(1) Spend meaningful time together. Dogs love and crave your attention.

(2) Take your dog with you to help him experience real world experiences.

(3) Create and bring forth a level of mutual respect, and

(4) Create a way of communicating and comprehending each other's needs.

By forming a bond between you and your dog it will not only help in your training of your dog but will also make your pet into a happy and well adjusted pet.

Dogs love to be loved and they will show you love in return. Remember your dog loves you unconditionally.

Once you have gained the respect and bonded with your dog then all of your training and teaching him will be a walk in the park.

The process for training your dog consists of 5 phases:

The first phase is teaching your dog, where you show him exactly what you want him to do.

The second phase is practicing with your dog what you have taught him

The third phase is generalizing - This is where you practice with your dog what you have taught him at different locations so he can learn to obey what he has been taught anywhere he might be.

In the fourth phase you will be testing your dog to see if he has learned what you have taught him in different locations where there may be distractions. You would do this after you have practiced with him and he is basically accurate 90% of the time.

If you test him and he does not respond correctly, then you may need to start over and keep testing him until you get the correct response. Keep showing praise, patience and persistence.

The final stage is the best stage of all, this is when your dog is doing everything he is taught even without you telling him.

Getting your dog trained right is very rewarding to you as their master.
