Boxer Dog Allergies

Their are a variety of health problems boxers may face one of which is allergies to food or their environment. They could experience this condition to a specific area of the body e.g. ears or feet to all over the body. If left untreated can be very uncomfortable and painful for your dog causing rashes, open sores and infections.

Allegies caused by food

Food allergies are usually caused by an ingredient or chemical in their diet. To treat a dog with this kind of allergy it has been recommended that you put your dog on a food elimination diet either a home cooked diet or a hydrolyzed protein diet. You need to do this over a 3 - 4 month period and you have to adhere strictly to the diet, which means no other treats in between meals. Owning a boxer myself I know this could be a bit tough as they are very food orientated especially when it comes to rewards but if you stick to the plan your dog will thank you for it.

Allergies caused by environment

This type of allergy can be caused contact to the skin by fleas, dust mites and ticks or by inhaling pollen or any other airborne particles - this could also be a seasonal condition. It can be treated with antihistamines and topical creams and lotions. Also bathing your dog in a specially medicated shampoo will not only relieve the symptons but also wash away any irritants on the skin.

Symptons can be excessive chewing and licking of their feet, continually scratching and rubbing against furniture or rolling around on the floor. Untreated your dog will scratch, chew and lick until they have irritated the skin to the point where they have created open sores which will eventually become infected.

Treatment

Primarily your vet may recommend treating the condition with anti-biotics and anti-fungal medications to relieve the symptons but the root cause of the problem needs to be addressed whether it's caused by food, environment or a mental condition such as anxiety. If all else fails you can get your dog tested by a dermalogical vet who will test your dogs skin. Steroids have been used to treat allergic reactions in dogs but are not recommended as a long term treatment and it is important that the cause is investigated and treated also.

To get more information regarding a hydrolyzed protein diet I would suggest discussing this option with your vet especially if you don't have time to prepare home made meals. They will be able to explain exactly what this type of diet is and recommend a good product for your dog.

It is important that dog owners know about "their" dog breed allergies. Good job on vip information.

Nice article. I have seen and heard more and more about home cooked diets for dogs. I have to think that bagged dog food is about as good for a dog as boxed food is for people.

Of my 2 Labradors one has a really bad problem with her ears. If I don't keep on top of it by regular cleaning she gets a waxy build up that drives her mad. We decided to cut out all snacks except her main meal and with the cleaning have now got it under control. Her coat has been good it just effects her ears. Thanks for the article.

I have the same with my boxer, she has the ear problem and occasionally feet and stomach but mostly the ears problem I have the little bugger wont let you near her ears really sensitive so today it was off to the vet I got her knocked out and got them to do the home nine yards, clip toenails, clean ears out and check for lumps and bumps! Just got her home and shes having a bit of an anxiety attack so had to take her to the after hours vet, hopefully tomorrow she'll be back to her cheery self. Sad boxer at the moment. We have to really watch her diet and I think its seasonal as well.

We tip on the ear cleaning. Put the solution onto the cotton ball and place in the ear then squeeze it. Then rub around the lob being very gentle. Then use a dry one to dry it out. Then let her shake. Also run the bottle under the warm tap for a few seconds to bring it up in temp a bit before you start . Lucy was squirmy at first but now she seems to love it. I also talk to her in a gentle calming way while I'm doing it so she stays calm.

hey deb - this article really rings a bell - we have a pug/beagle/terrier (he looks mostly terrier) who got some type of rash - we went around the horn with steroid shots from the vet in the event it was a reaction to something outdoors - didn't work - on to food allergies and $6.00/lb hypoallergenic dog food - and yes - no treats - and this dog loves people food so to keep him on the strict diet has been fun

Hey stephen I know I just took Bonnie to the vet today she has the rash going on and I to am investigating the whole food business, and she loves people food and I have to educate everybody including nana not to give treats, Bonnie actually listens for the baking tins and smells when my mum is baking and is down there like a shot and good old mum has been letting her sample the treats.!
