Boxers And Canine Good Citizen Award

I can't think of a better training programme for a boxer. You may be asking what is a canine good citizen award. The Canine Good Citizen programme is a two part programme that teaches dog owners the fundamentals of good dog behaviour and pet ownership. It was started in 1989 by the AKC and has been adopted worldwide by many countries as a standard for dog training.

Great for boxer dogs who at times can be overbearing and annoying, yes I know as boxer owners we think our boxer companions are just full of fun and are so cute but in the eyes of other not so adoring boxer fans they can be seen as overbearing and just down right disobedient! The boxer has many admirable traits which include being energetic, playful, and funny but sometimes they do need to be toned down just a little bit!

The CGC programme would be a great start for any dog especially a boxer to bring out all those positive traits which the boxer is adored for. Great if your thinking about your dog being used as a therapy dog, agility, obedience and even in the show ring where good manners are a must! This programme will give you peace of mind when taking your dog out in the presence of other people and dogs.

All dogs mixed and pure breeds can participate in the CGC programme, the restrictions are that dogs must be vaccinated and immunised. Owners are required to sign a pledge requiring them to have their dog under the care of a vet who will determine a schedule for vaccines and other health care issues which any responsible dog owner should do anyway.

Boxer dogs if not trained and taught some basic manners can be overwhelming and just downright destructive! They need to have a clear set of rules on how to behave especially in public. The boxer dog is adorable and loves nothing more than a good romp around on the floor with its owner or run in the park but imagine being in the park and your boxer with all there good intentions decides they like the look of that really cute little girl playing ball with her mum and your friendly boxer goes romping over there (usually at lightening speed) and knocks the poor child flying then proceeds to slobber all over her!

For one thing your going to have a really outraged parent and worse consequences for you and your dog. There is no excuse for this and you need to be in control of your boxer dog at all times! There's plenty of evidence of bad boxer behaviour on You Tube! You need to remember that the boxer dog is a strong, muscular dog and quite capable of causing some damage.

Not only will your boxer enjoy the challenge of achieving the Canine Good Citizen Award, but it will be a rewarding experience for you and your dog as well as a springboard for more doggy events you may want to venture into! You will receive a certificate which you can be proud of and feel at ease when you take your boxer out in public being assured that they have excellent manners and will behave accordingly.

Hi Debbie great article, I think owners think that they can buy a dog of this size and let it play around the home without any problem. However boxers are very energetic and need loads of exercise to burn that excess off them. It is also important to socialize them from a young age that way they know how to behave in public without the owner being nervous of letting them off lease. Its good that award schemes are available for owners to get their dogs properly trained and socialized. I have 2 labs and they take a bit of work but its great to be able to take them to the beach or park and not have to worry about them misbehaving. Its not all good as they have the occasional relapse but nobody is perfect, right!

Yeah i know what you mean about them having the occasional relapse, Bonnie is great most of the time every so often she'll decide no I'm not coming home the beach is way more fun and far too busy playing with my furry friends! Then the stubborn boxer comes out in here. Thanks for your comment Mark.
