Breaking News - atlanta Dog Scene Interview With A True Dog Lover

Atlanta Dog Scene gives Greg Tallant the "Compassion For The Canine" thumbs up for his true love, appreciation and companionship for his dog Austin.

What follows is a very detailed interview between Austin, Greg, and Atlanta Dog Scene today and it was a true pleasure.

Me: What is your four legged family members name?

Greg: Austin

Me: What breed is Austin?

Greg: DNA showed that he was up to 75% Akita, Up to 20% Dalmatian, and then some Terrier and "other" thrown in there.

Me: How old is he?

Greg: Austin is 4.5 years old.

Me: Do you celebrate his birthdays?

Greg: Yes. July is his birth month and we celebrate mid-July.

Me: Are there any special stories that you would like to tell us about Austin?

Greg: When Austin was a puppy, I bought him an "indestructible dog bed." I put that in his "house" (cage) so that he would be comfortable. I cage train my pets when they are puppies for two reasons: 1) So they don't destroy my entire house. 2) It becomes a safe place for them and when they are older, I leave the cage up so that they can go there if they are feeling threatened or uncomfortable. Anyway, my dog sitter (actually a friend who took him out mid-day since I was a work) called me. She told me that she wanted to warn me about something before I came home so that I wouldn't be too mad. I arrived home with the knowledge of what I might find. What I did find was a cage full of foamy material and the happiest puppy in the world just rolling and playing around in the mess. How could anyone be angry at that? My only regret is that I did not take a picture that day. But the memory is very special.

One other story that still makes me smile: When Austin was about 1 year old, I thought he may be ready to stay in the downstairs room of my condo. The room was a tiled mudroom and I had a gate stopping him from coming up the stairs. The same dog sitter called me with yet another warning not to be angry. This time when I arrived I found a huge hole in the drywall that led to my neighbor's condo. Thankfully he hadn't hit an electrical box or a pipe. But he certainly had a blast. Needless to say, he was back in his "house" when I left for work the next day.

Me: Is he spoiled rotten?

Greg: Without a doubt.

Me: What obedience problems are you having with Austin at times?

Greg: Austin doesn't understand "Don't bark" or "No bark" and has a few things that will set him off. Any doorbell, including on television, will start him barking. A knock at the door, also. Lately he starts to bark when my mobile phone rings when my ex calls. I have it set for "Fur Elise" by Beethoven when a call or email comes in from the ex. For whatever reason Austin starts to bark every time my phone rings or alerts me with this song.

Me: Have you always been an animal person?

Greg: Yes. My parents always had German Shepherds when I was young. I think that is why I like having a bigger dog. Austin is about 65 - 70 pounds.

Me: Can you tell us how Austin came into your life?

Greg: When I was living in Detroit, a work colleague of mine asked me to go to an annual event at the Detroit Zoo. The event had all surrounding area shelters set up at the Zoo one weekend and people could come and adopt cats or dogs. The colleague was going because she wanted a cat and I said that I'd go just to look at dogs. Of course I ended up seeing Austin (Beau at the time) and had to take him home. She ended up not getting a pet that day. I have pictures of that day and his arrival at the house. Great memories.

Me: Any Atlanta dog businesses that you would like to recommend to other loving dog owners?

Greg: Camp Woof - Decatur and Toco Hills have been great to us. Austin goes there for Doggie Day Care at least once a week. Because money is so tight, I take him on weekends where they only charge $10.00 for the day. Drop him off after 7AM and come back prior to 7PM and it's only $10. A full day of play while I run errands or do a lot of nothing.

Dekalb Veterinary Clinic is Austin's Vet. Dr Katz is his Vet and was my last pet's (Otis) vet. I trust Dr Katz and wouldn't go anywhere else. In 2002, Dr Katz came to my house when Otis' cancer had him uncomfortable and it was time for him to go to Rainbow Bridge. (Google Rainbow Bridge - unless your loss is recent. Very cool but very sad.

Tailwaggers in Decatur used to clip and clean Otis. They were great to us and I can't leave them off my list even though Austin's coat doesn't need trimming. I would recommend them to anyone.

Me: Any Atlanta dog businesses that you would suggest that need some improvement in services?

Greg: I can't say that I do.

Me: How has having Austin in your family made changes to your life?

Greg: I am much calmer when I'm with Austin. I know that I have more compassion because I own a dog. I know that a pet is completely dependant on their owners and any mistreatment is unacceptable and, to me, unforgivable.

Me: Are you part the movement of rescuing and adopting dogs?

Greg: I am not. But I would be happy to hear how I could help.

Me: How do you feel about petfinder as a service to help dogs find forever homes?

Greg: I have not used them as a resource, but I went to their site and like what I see. I would need to research and hear other people's experience before I'd make any judgements.

Me: How do you feel about the fact that there are over 4 million dogs in the United States that need to be adopted?

Greg: I wish I could adopt or give enough to save them all. I know that is unrealistic and only wishful thinking. I believe that God takes care of animals differently than he does people because animals are so vulnerable, but the numbers you quote almost make me question my beliefs. I can only have faith. I will say that I am happy that Austin and I have each other and I will take care of him until he is ready to go to Rainbow Bridge (or have him taken care of if I should go first).
