Build Dog Agility Equipment For Your Boxer Dog

Is your Boxer dog bored, build some dog agility equipment for them. Not only will your Boxer dog love there new hobby, it will strengthen the bond between you and your dog! There is a variety of books and informtion on this very popular sport for dogs and information on how you can get started in your own backyard with simple jumps, weaves, and many other agility course objects.

Boxer dogs need to be stimulated physically and mentally and if they're left to their own devices can be very destructive, an agility course will not only challenge them mentally but also help with obedience training also. One way of building your own agility course at home is to use PVC piping, this is a great material being strong, inexpensive, easy to access -available at hardware and plumbing stores, it's lightweight and you can dismantle it if your a bit short on space.

You could easily spend a small fortune buying agility equipment, so why not have a go at building your own. A tyre jump is a perfect way start to your agility course. To start off with you will need to use 1" PVC piping to build your stand that you will attach your frame to which your dog will be jumping through:

  • Cut 4 pieces of 1” PVC pipe 16” in length
  • Cut 2 pieces of 1” PVC pipe cut 34” in length
  • You will need 2 x T’s to join connect your lengths

Use the T joining pieces and insert the two 16" PVC pre-cut lengths of pipe to make the base of your stand the part that sits on the ground and then insert the pre-cut 34" length of pipe into the top of the T junction to make the vertical pipe where your frame will be attached. Now your stands are ready to attach your frame to.

To make your frame for your tyre ring - this is what your dog is going to jump through (in this example they are making a rectangle frame, you could get creative and make a hexagon shape if you wanted more of a ring type appearance). You will use 2" PVC pipe cut to build your frame:

  • Cut 4 pieces of 2"pipe to 32” in length
  • You will need 4 x PVC elbows to insert your PVC lengths into

Use the elbows to connect all your PVC lengths, you should end up with a square frame for your dog to jump through., attach your PVC frame to the two stands using screws. When attaching your frame to the stands make sure that the height is appropriate for your dogs size and ability. You can adjust sizes of lengths to suit your own dogs size. Now you have your first agility course piece if equipment! You could build a jump using the same kind of techniques and materials!

You can set up an agility course in quite a small area it could just be a couple of agility course objects to begin with.Your agility course doesn't have to be complicated it should be easy for your dog to get through to begin with. If you make it too difficult from the start you'll end up getting frustrated with your dog and then it's no fun for anybody. Remember Boxer dogs can be stubborn especially if your trying to force them into doing something.

Their is a great video on you tube where "Its me or the dog" trainer Victoria sets up a relatively simple agility course for a boxer dog called Zulu. This dog was used to being on acreage in South Africa and when they relocated to the UK he was downsized to an apartment with only a small backyard they used an agility course to stimulate him mentaly and physically while at the same time getting him back on track with his obedience training. I was very impressed with how well this worked for this Boxer dog who was causing some problems in and outside the home!
