Canine Health for Dogs - Vaccinations

Dogs are somewhat unconcerned with their own health issues. They eat an amazing amount of stuff that is not good for them with great gusto. As an owner you need to take health for dogs on yourself and keep abreast of the latest health issues and techniques to keep your dog healthy. There are many levels of health for dogs. Veterinarians make a concerted effort to keep up with a specific niche by specializing. Most dog owners don't want that level of commitment but do need to have a basic knowledge of the science behind their dog's health.

The first need of most dog owners is to understand all of the vaccinations that dogs get. There are a few essential vaccinations that all dogs must have. Rabies vaccine is mandated by US law. This one is essential to not only maintain health for dogs but to keep them from transmitting this disease to people.

DHPP is another vaccine that is given on a regular basis. This is a cocktail that covers the dog for 4 diseases. Distemper, Hepatitis, Parainfluenza and Parvovirus. Distemper is passed through fluids, sneezing and coughing are the most frequent ways that distemper is spread, it is also present in feces. This disease shows up with a high fever ( around 104 deg F) and may be accompanied by coughing. Eventually, it settles into the kidneys, intestine and lymphatic system. It can then cause diarrhea and loss of bladder control. Distemper may also attack the brain tissue and result in uncontrolled outbursts in the dog. Distemper is fatal in about 1/2 of the dogs that contract this disease.

Hepatitis is a disease of the liver, many complications can occur when the liver is not functioning. The particular strain that is most often seen in dogs is the CAV-1 ( Canine Adenovirus Type 1). Symptoms are vomiting, diarrhea, coughing and bladder control problems are common, weight loss and Jaundice ( Yellowing of the skin and eyes)may develop if the infection progresses. Blood work will identify the infection. Treatment is to provide supportive care for the symptoms.

Para-influenza is a respiratory disease. This is often confused with Kennel Cough as the symptoms are similar. This disease will cause cough and a nasal discharge. More severe cases will exhibit a high fever and may develop pneumonia as a secondary infection. This is a relatively new disease becoming established in 2004 and spreading rapidly throughout the US.

Parvovirus is a disease that effects mostly puppies. Adult dogs have increased resistance. This does not mean that a dog should not get this vaccine. Fatality rates in dogs contracting this disease are about 91%. There are two forms cardiac and intestinal. The symptoms are vomiting ,diarrhea, and loss of appetite. The cardiac form appears to attack the heart muscle.

If you have a dog and are worried about the side effects of the vaccinations, look at the protection provided by the vaccines against the detrimental effects of the diseases they protect. I think you will find the rewards of getting vaccinated are much greater than the relative risks. Health for dogs requires that you make every effort to keep your pet safe from the microscopic world.
